Year 5 have had a very productive week of learning! In English, immersing ourselves in our class novel, 'Kensuke's Kingdom,' we imagined the heart-wrenching moment of Michael's disappearance from the family's yacht through his mother's eyes. We planned, drafted and edited powerful diary entries, capturing Michael's mother's fear and desperation as she and her husband searched frantically for their son. As part of our writing journey, we recapped our knowledge of fronted adverbials in order to add depth and detail to our writing. In maths, we have mastered rounding 6-digit numbers to the nearest 10,000 and 100,000, showing a strong grasp of place value all the way up to 1,000,000. In History, we continued delving into the fascinating world of the Tudors, exploring the life of Anne Boleyn. We examined a variety of sources and formed our own deductions about how she was perceived by her contemporaries. In Science, we journeyed to outer space to uncover the mysteries of the moon. We learnt about the different phases of the moon, and even described its movement relative to the Earth. The children asked so many questions about our solar system - we appear to have many budding astrophysicists amongst us!
Writing: As well as celebrating National Poetry Day, we will be beginning to plan our own narratives based on our class text 'Kensuke's Kingdom.'
Maths: We will begin a new unit focusing on addition and subtraction, specifically looking at how to use number lines and place value counters to add within 1,000,000.
Science: We will learn and be able to explain what causes day and night and the seasons.
History: We are very excited about our upcoming trip to Hever Castle where we will be taking part in a Tudor workshop and learning more about Anne Boleyn.
Art: Continuing our Typography unit, we will learn how to make our drawings visually stronger by drawing over maps.
