This week's learning...

In English, year 4 enjoyed creating freeze frames and thought trackers linked to our text, 'Ice Trap'. We have looked at conjunctions and the difference between formal and informal language, ahead of our writing next week.

In Maths, year 4 have been looking at division and learning how to divide with remainders.

In English, year 5 have been learning about the structure of a narrative and how a story mountain can help us plan our own story. We have created our own story mountains in preparation for writing about Michael's (the main character in 'Kensuke's Kingdom')  experiences after he wakes up alone on a remote island, having fallen from his family's yacht.  We have also looked at figurative language and thought of our own examples of similes, metaphors and personification that we could use in our writing next week.

In Maths, year 5 have been learning how to multiply two and three digit numbers by two digit numbers.  We have practised the grid method and formal method of long multiplication.

Eagles, Falcons and Hawks have enjoyed learning some differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic this week, as part of our new Geography topic, 'Frozen Kingdoms'. In science, the children enjoyed using Google Earth on their Chromebooks to fly around the world, visiting different habitats and understanding the impact of climate change on each place. As part of Anti-bullying Week, years 4 and 5 have created compliments mugs and friendly hands to emphasise the importance of using kind words.

Upcoming learning...

Over the next fortnight, all children in years 4 and 5 will be completing reading, maths, grammar and spelling assessments.

As well as this, year 4 will be planning and writing a diary entry from the perspective of Sir Ernest Shackleton and will be continuing with multiplication and division in maths, using their times tables knowledge to help them with this. Please continue to support your children in learning their times tables at homes.

Year 5 will be planning and writing their own narrative based on Kensuke's Kingdom.  They will be using lots of adventurous vocabulary and including a variety of examples of figurative language.  In maths, we will be commencing our unit on division.  The children will firstly learn how to divide 4 digit numbers by multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000, before moving on to dividing 4 digit numbers using both long and short division.
