Children in Need

Today we celebrated Children in Need Day. The whole school got involved, dressing in yellow and spots and raising money for this important charity. Across the school, our pupils learned about the different ways that children and young people can be supported, and how important it is to help others.

The money raised from this event will go towards supporting disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. It will help to provide them with the essential things they need, such as food, clothing, and shelter. It will also help to fund projects and activities that support their mental and emotional well-being.

The school is very proud of the way that everyone came together to support Children in Need. It has been a truly special day, and it really showed how much we all care about helping others.

Huge thanks to all our parents for your generous donations.

Odd Socks Day

On Monday, as part of Anti-bullying Week, our school took part in Odd Socks Day, a global initiative that promotes individuality, diversity, and kindness.

Odd Socks Day is a fun and engaging way to teach children about the importance of accepting and celebrating differences. Just as no two socks are the same, no two people are the same. We all have our own unique strengths, talents, and perspectives. Odd Socks Day reminds us that it's okay to be different, and that our differences make us special.

In addition to wearing odd socks, our children also participated in a variety of activities that reinforced the message of kindness and acceptance. These activities included:

We were so impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm that our children showed during Odd Socks Day. It was a wonderful reminder of the power of kindness and acceptance.

Odd Socks Day is a simple but powerful way to make a difference in the world. By celebrating our differences and promoting kindness, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming community for everyone.

Anti-bullying Week

Throughout this week, we have been actively participating in the NSPCC's Anti-Bullying Week. This year's theme is 'Make a Noise About Bullying' emphasising the importance of speaking up against bullying and creating a safe and supportive environment for all our children.

At Shawley, we are committed to fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion, where every child feels valued and empowered. All our children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the interactive assembly and workshops led by Lily from Openview Education designed to raise awareness about bullying, promote empathy and understanding, and empower children to take action against bullying.

Children in years 4 and 5 made a good friend hand wreath showing 5 important qualities a  good friend should demonstrate to support someone if they being bullied.

Book and Xmas Jumper Swap - Friday 24th November 3.15-3.30pm in the hall

As part of our ongoing sustainability initiative, we will be holding a Xmas jumper and Book Swap after school next Friday. Please bring along any unwanted books and Xmas jumpers to swap. Many thanks for supporting us with our drive to become more sustainable in as many ways as possible.

Poppy Appeal

We would like to express our gratitude for your generous donations to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Your donations will help to provide vital assistance to veterans and their families, ensuring that they receive the care and support they deserve.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students and staff embraced the Poppy Appeal. They showed real understanding of the importance of remembering and supporting those who have served our country.

Thank you once again for your generosity and support and thank you to our Pupil Advocates who visited classes across the school with the Poppy Appeal merchandise throughout last week.

Reception Sponsored Scoot

Huge thanks to our Reception parents for your generous donations towards our Sponsored Scoot. Polar Bears thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this activity and all the funds raised go directly towards additional resources and activities to support and enhance our EYFS children's learning. This week reception had a great time making gingerbread men as part of their Nursery Rhymes focus. Sponsored Scoot funds were used to purchase the ingredients!

We pride ourselves on offering our children varied and exciting experiences and activities that help to support their learning across the curriculum.

The School Fund will allow us to provide additional activities across all year groups.

We have a voluntary school fund donation of £15 per child or a maximum of £30 for a family if there are siblings at the school.

Achievements Outside School

Blue Peter Book Club Badge

Many congratulations to Caitlin for being awarded a Blue Peter badge for writing an excellent review of Tom Gates' 'Really Good Skills' book. Caitlin particularly enjoyed the interactive nature of this book along with its incredibly humorous writing. A huge number of children enter book reviews to the Blue Peter Book Club and only the best ones are awarded with a badge. Caitlin also received a very well-deserved letter of congratulations from the Blue Peter programme editor. We are delighted that you are a real ambassador for the Love of Reading at Shawley Caitlin!

Blue Peter Eco Badge

Albert B-D was recently awarded with a Green Blue Peter Badge for all his efforts  in doing things to help the environment.

While he was on holiday in Wittering during the summer, he and his family did a beach clean up and collected over 100 pieces of plastic. This included broken fishing nets, plastic bottle tops, a flip flop, plastic toys and other plastic rubbish!

In addition to this, Albert  also planted many different types of flowers in the garden to help keep the pollinators happy. Many congratulations to Albert for being awarded this well-deserved badge!

Staff Spotlight

Meet  Ms Lefley

A little bit about me:   Hello, my name is Ms Lefley. I have been working at Shawley since 2017, based mainly in years 3, 4 and 5. I currently teach the wonderful 4L in the morning and the amazing Eagles in the afternoon.

My Favourites

Hobbies - I love going out for nice meals with my friends, family and husband. I’m also a real sun-seeker and love heading away on beach holidays, though relaxing holidays are a distant memory since welcoming my daughter Grace into the world last year!

Food - I love most food (except mushrooms, baked beans and brussel sprouts!) If I could choose any cuisine it would probably be Italian - I love pasta and pizza! I have a real sweet tooth too and I love chocolate, as long as it isn't dark!

Drink - I would never turn down a Caffe Nero iced vanilla latte, single shot.

Colour - Coral, lilac and peppermint are my favourite colours.

Animal - I love pandas and elephants, especially baby ones, and I also really like giraffes - their eyelashes are incredible!

Book -  My favourite book (for grown ups) is 'Where The Crawdads Sing' by Delia Owens. I read it a couple of years ago and I haven't read a better one since! I am currently reading  The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo to 4L during our read aloud slot and we're really enjoying it.

School Lottery

Shawley's school lottery has been set up specifically to raise money and make a difference for our children! It's a fantastic way to bring parents, carers, staff and the wider community together, in partnership with our school, and at the same time give something back. We hope to raise funds that can support and enrich the education of our children - we aim to provide extra resources for the children, improve the school environment as well as run extracurricular activities such as music, art and sport.

Join today!  Click here to access the Your School Lottery website to learn more about how it works and how to join.

Your support is greatly appreciated and we wish you good luck!

LEO Catering

School Meals

Our school catering provision is offered to all children across the Trust by LEO Catering, our in house catering supplier.  The menus are created and refreshed three times a year, catering for children with allergies and are available to view below.  Our menus follow government food standard guidelines and offer excellent value at £2.70 a day for a main meal, dessert, choice of salad bar, fresh bread daily and vegetarian and Halal options. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free meal funded by the government's Universal Infant Free School Meal grant and we encourage anyone in any year group who thinks they may be eligible to apply for free school meal funding to apply.

Menus are available here: www.leoacademytrust.co.uk/647/school-meals.

Children in Years 3-6 will need to pay for their meals via Arbor.  Cost of a school meal is £2.70 per day, £13.50 per week.  Please ensure there are sufficient funds in your child's account in advance, otherwise no school dinner can be ordered and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch.

For those children who do still bring in a packed lunch, you may have noticed that your child brings home some of their lunch as we encourage the children to take home uneaten food.  This enables you to see exactly what your child is eating at lunchtimes and adapt their lunch accordingly.  We ask that packed lunches include healthy options in line with our Healthy School status.  Children should not bring fizzy drinks or chocolate bars to school.

We have a number of children with nut allergies in school which means that all staff and parents must be vigilant about ingredients we use in school and items put into lunch boxes.  No nuts should be put into packed lunches.
