It was fantastic to welcome Year 5 back to school last week. We have been thoroughly impressed with how well all the children have settled in to their new classes.
In English, we have begun reading our class text 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. The children learnt that the main character, Michael, is about to embark on an exciting round the world sailing trip with his parents and pet dog, Stella. Our first piece of writing will be a balanced argument on the topic of whether or not this is a sensible decision. In preparation for this, we have been analysing features of balanced arguments and learning about compare and contrast conjunctions.
In maths, we have been learning to read and write numbers to 1,000,000 and how to determine the value of each digit in a 5 digit number. We have also compared 6 digit numbers using the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols.
In history this term, our enquiry question is 'What was life like in Tudor England?' This week we looked at various primary sources concerning Henry VIII (including portraits and written documents) and discussed and justified our interpretations of him using evidence from these sources. We learnt about the importance of bias and that the creator of the source might have a specific agenda!
In science, we have been learning about the scientists who developed the geocentric, heliocentric and static model in our Solar System. We researched information on each model and compared which one is best used to describe our Solar System.
In art, we have been learning about 'What Typography is' and recreating letters in our names using different coloured paper and card.
Writing: In writing, we will be writing our balanced arguments on the topic of whether Michael from 'Kensuke's Kingdom' should travel around the world with his family in a yacht.
Maths: In Maths, we will be adding numbers within 1,000,000 using rounding and concrete materials.
Science: In Science, we will be learning about the different phases of the Moon and the number of moons on the different planets.
History: In History, we will be learning about Anne Boleyn and why she was executed.
Art: In Art, we will be using our typography and drawing skills to make maps.
