In English this week, year 4 read chapter 2 of The Firework Maker's Daughter. We then collaboratively planned a setting description of the full moon ceremony before independently writing it from the perspective of Hamlet. We were careful to make ambitious vocabulary choices and a use a range of sentence types to engage the reader. In maths, year 4 consolidated our learning on mass, length and volume and started our new topic, area and perimeter. We calculated the perimeter of different quadrilaterals and began to understand that area is the space inside a shape.
In English, year 5 began our fantastic new class novel, 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. We discovered that a group of four children (Fred, Con, Lila and Max) have survived a plane crash in the Amazon Rainforest and now have to fend for themselves without any adult help. We have begun to think about the different aspects of their personalities in preparation for writing a character comparison next week. In maths, year 5 began our new topic of Geometry. We recapped the different types of angles and learnt how to use a protractor. We also discovered that angles on a straight line always add up to 180 degrees.
In Computing this week we were using the Spike Lego app to build a bus that used sensors to travel from bus stop to bus stop. This involved collaboration, team work and resilience! In science, we learned about the life cycle of a mammal. In art, we looked at the outfits and inspiration of Lebanese fashion designer Tatyana Antoun. We started to learn about the history of the census in history.
Next week in English, year 4 will be continuing with The Firework Maker's Daughter, thinking more carefully about where the story is set - Indonesia. We will be researching the country, ahead of planning and writing a non-chronological report the following week.
In maths next week, year 4 will be continuing with area and perimeter, making comparisons between different shapes. We will also be introduced to our next topic, angles and will be identifying different types of angles.
Next week in English, year 5 will be planning, writing and editing their character comparisons of Fred, Lila and Con, hopefully including plenty of wonderful conjunctions!
In maths next week, year 5 will be learning how to calculate angles around a point and how to accurately draw acute and obtuse angles using a protractor.
In art, all children in Eagles, Falcons and Hawks will be looking at how our surroundings influence us and what we wear. In science we will be learning about the life cycles of amphibians, insects and birds. We will continue to learn about what a census is used for in history.
