This week's learning...

In English this week, year 4 were introduced to our new text, 'Ice Trap! Shackleton's Incredible Expedition' by M. P. Robertson and Meredith Hooper. We made predictions based on the front cover and the opening paragraphs, before focusing our learning on prepositions and relative clauses.

In Maths this week, year 4 started our new chapter on multiplication and division. We have been introduced to some songs on YouTube which may support us with learning our times tables, before getting started with learning our 6, 7 and 9 times tables. Please do continue to work on times tables up to 12x12 at home.

In English, year 5 have begun reading our new class novel, 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo.  We have been introduced to the main character, Michael and discovered that he and his family are about to embark on a once in a lifetime sailing trip around the world.    We have started to think about the pros and cons of such a trip and practised our oracy skills by participating in a class debate.

In Maths, year 5 have learned how to identify the differences between prime and composite numbers and we have been introduced to the concept of square and cube numbers.

Eagles, Falcons and Hawks have consolidated our knowledge of the Roman invasion of Britain and have begun an exciting new science topic  of 'Sustainability', where our first lesson focused on the causes and effects of climate change  and our need to reduce carbon emissions.

Upcoming learning...

Next week in English, year 4 will be planning, writing, editing and publishing a blog about Shackleton's voyage.

In Maths, year 4 are continuing with multiplication and division, learning tricks and tips to help us multiply by 11 and 12.

In year 5, we will be writing a balanced argument on the topic of whether it is a good idea for Michael and his family to sail around the world.  We will be ensuring we use conjunctions to contrast as well as lots of fronted adverbials.

In Maths, year 5 will be practising different strategies for multiplying 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers by a single digit.  We will also begin to look at multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.

Eagles, Falcons and Hawks will be learning more about carbon emissions in Science, learning about various festivals of light including Diwali in RE, and making comparisons between the Arctic and Antarctic in Geography.
