On Tuesday 27th February 2024 our Year 5 & 6 boys travelled to Breech Lane for the North Downs fixture vs Walton on the Hill. Being played on a smaller pitch caused issues with space, ultimately resulting in a 0-0 draw.
While the final scoreline suggests a stalemate, the match report highlights that the boys playing on the smaller pitch were the more aggressive team, generating the majority of the scoring opportunities. Their determination and attacking creativity were on display throughout the game, but they were ultimately unable to convert their chances.
However, the opposing team's defensive organisation and goalkeeping heroics shouldn't be overlooked. They effectively shut down the attacking threats posed by their opponents, keeping a clean sheet despite facing sustained pressure.
Overall, the 0-0 draw was a testament to the fighting spirit and defensive discipline of both teams.
On Tuesday 20th February our U11 girls welcomed Banstead Junior in the North Downs League fixture. The girls' football team bounced back from two recent heavy defeats in remarkable fashion, securing a narrow 1-0 victory. This hard-fought win is a testament to their character and unwavering spirit. The match's lone goal came from the foot of Ella, who marked her return from injury in triumphant style. Her clinical strike proved to be the difference maker, propelling her team to a much-needed win.
This victory is a significant milestone for the girls' team, showcasing their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They displayed excellent teamwork and perseverance throughout the match, effectively overcoming their recent setbacks.
Well done girls!
On Friday 23rd February our U10 girls travelled to St Mary's Oxted for the Surrey Cup quarter final. The girls' football team narrowly missed out on Surrey U10 semi final place, falling to a heart-breaking 1-0 defeat in the final. Despite a valiant effort and a closely contested match, a late goal from their opponents in the last five minutes secured victory for the opposing team.
The match was a tense affair, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination throughout. The girls created several scoring opportunities and displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the game. However, their opponents capitalised on a late chance, snatching the win with a goal in the final five minutes. While the final result is undoubtedly disappointing, the girls' achievements should not be overlooked. Reaching the quarter final of the Surrey U10 Cup is a significant accomplishment, and they should be proud of their efforts and dedication.
Our Year 3 footballers embarked on their first ever football tournament experience this week, with performances filled with smiles, determination, and a taste for the competitive spirit.
While they might not have secured any victories on the pitch, the young athletes displayed an infectious enthusiasm throughout the tournament. They approached every match with a positive attitude, eager to learn and improve their skills.
Despite facing more experienced opponents, the Year 3 team showcased their teamwork and ability to follow instructions. They cheered each other on, encouraging their teammates and demonstrated true sportsmanship throughout the afternoon.
Well done Year 3!
In collaboration with Surrey FA and Reigate & Banstead Schools FA, Shawley will be involved in this year’s #LetGirlsPlay football initiative.
By 2024, The FA’s and Barclay’s ambition is for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys in schools and clubs. #LetGirlsPlay is a campaign to drive influence and change perceptions, showing that football can and should be played by girls. It is bringing together a growing community of people of all genders, ages and backgrounds who want to champion equal access for girls, helping create independent, resilient young girls who will be a force for good in all local communities.

Our young cricketers recently participated in the CKC Cricket Tournament, gaining valuable experience and facing tough competition. Though both their matches resulted in narrow defeats, the team displayed commendable spirit and uncovered areas for improvement before the official cricket season commences after Easter.
The CKC Indoor Cricket Tournament provided a platform for the team to test their skills under unique indoor rules, which often differ from the traditional outdoor format. This adaptation presented a learning curve, but the team demonstrated their ability to adjust and compete effectively.
Well done to West Ashtead who qualified and go onto the next round at Lords.
On Wednesday 28th February a group of children from Gymnastics club travelled to Glenthorne High for the Sutton SSP Cheerleading Workshop. The enthusiastic young participants delved into the world of cheerleading, exploring a dynamic blend of dance and gymnastic elements. The workshop not only introduced them to basic moves like jumps, cheers, and stunts but also fostered teamwork and coordination.
It was great to work with the Glenthorne leaders who served as mentors, guiding the younger participants with patience and encouragement. Their presence not only provided valuable technical guidance but also inspired the young participants to set their own aspirations in the sport.
The workshop culminated in a series of performances, with each school performing their sequences to the group.
Well done, girls!
On Tuesday 26th February 2024 a group of Year 5 children travelled to St Philamena's for the BEE Hi5 netball tournament. The tournament organised by Sutton SSP and designed by England Netball, serves as a development event, providing a nurturing environment for children to experience the joy of netball for the first time or continue honing their skills in a friendly atmosphere.
During the afternoon, the players buzzed with excitement as they learned the fundamentals of netball, including throwing, catching, footwork, and shooting. But the focus wasn't just on technical skills; the "Beeliefs" – England Netball's core values – were also on display. These values, promoting self-belief, teamwork, and sportsmanship, ensured every child felt included and empowered to participate.
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the mini-matches, where the young players put their newfound skills into practice. The emphasis wasn't on winning or losing, but rather on enjoying the camaraderie and experiencing the thrill of competition in a supportive environment.
We look forward to starting our netball league fixtures next week.
On Monday 23rd February children from Y3 and 4 were invited to take part in the Nomads Korfball tournament at Glyn High School. The team tested their skills against teams from Cheam Park Farm, Manor Park, Brookfield, and Nonsuch. This exciting event provided a platform for the young athletes to showcase their developing talents and experience the competitive spirit of korfball.
Throughout the tournament, the Y3 & 4 team displayed a commendable understanding of the sport's unique blend of netball and basketball. Their agility and teamwork were evident as they executed throws through the korf (basket) mounted on a high pole. The players demonstrated excellent communication and strategic thinking, adapting their tactics to counter the strengths of their opponents.
While the final results may not reflect individual victories, the true value of the tournament lies in the experience gained. The young korfballers faced a variety of playing styles, encountering different strengths and weaknesses in each opposing team. This exposure will undoubtedly serve as a valuable learning experience, allowing them to refine their techniques and develop a deeper understanding of the game.
