In year 4 this week, we wrote character descriptions from Arthur and the Golden Rope. We focused on using ambitious language, similes, metaphors and expanded noun phrases in order to describe the appearance and personality of a character. In maths, we began our new topic of decimals. We have learnt how to represent tenths and hundredths as decimals.
In English, year 5 have written and edited our formal speeches, with the intention of persuading the United Nations to take greater action against climate change. We then recorded our speeches using Mote so we could listen back and critique our own performances. It appears we have many budding Greta Thunbergs at Shawley! In Maths, we learnt how to convert simplified fractions into decimal fractions and subsequently decimal numbers. We also learnt how to add and subtract decimals. All of year 5 had a fantastic start to their swimming lessons. We are so proud of them all!
In Years 4 and 5, we have looked at the hardness of materials in science. We have been learning about the Great Barrier Reef in Geography and have been considering dreams and goals for the future in our PSHE lessons.

Next week in Year 4 we will be continuing with our topic on decimals in maths. We will compare, order and round decimals to 2 decimal places. In English we will read the next chapter of our book 'Arthur and the Golden Rope', consider what each character may be thinking at this point in the story and the emotions they may be feeling. We will also be consolidating our knowledge of conjunctions in grammar.
Next week in English, year 5 will put themselves into Bear's shoes and prepare for writing a narrative concerning how Bear came to be stranded on Bear Island. They will create a story map and will put Bear in the 'hot seat' in order to consider his thoughts and feelings at each stage of his story. We also look forward to celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. In Maths, we will be continuing to add and subtract decimals. We will also be commencing our termly assessments in Reading, Maths, Grammar and Spelling.
In Years 4 and 5, we will be researching why our oceans are suffering as part of our Geography topic, we will be comparing the transparency or opacity of different materials in Science, and we will enjoy celebrating World Book Day by taking time to enjoy reading and sharing books.
