Year 5 have had a fantastic start to the year! We can already see how enthusiastic they are about their learning which is amazing.
In English, we are reading the book ' Kensuke's Kingdom'. We have had some brilliant discussions based on whether Michael and his family should travel and explore the world on their boat. The children have written some fantastic debates discussing the for and against arguments around travelling the world. We cannot wait to continue the book and see what fantastic pieces of writing the children can create! Our art for this week has also linked to the book and the children have explore different tones to blue to create a picture of waves. See below some of the fantastic colour pallets year 5 have created!
In maths, we are exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. The children have used manipulative and place value charts to explore and partition numbers. We have also spent some time comparing and ordering numbers. Year 5 have also been recapping the rules of rounding and applying this to numbers up to 1,000,000. It has been fantastic seeing the children challenge themselves further through the problem solving and reasoning challenges in their journals.
In science, our topic is 'Force'. We have explored different types of forces and how they act upon each other. This week, we have completed an investigation using the Newton meters to investigate mass and weight.
Our humanities topic this term is 'Explorers'. We have had great fun looking into the different reasons that people explore. We have looked at the different trade routes used by Christopher Columbus and the effectiveness of the routes tried and completed. We are looking forward to learning about different types of explorers this term!
Please could you encourage your child to read daily and continue to use Doodle maths and English. These tools are fantastic for supporting their learning in class and the more frequently they complete them, the more effective they will be!
