Year 5 have had a very enjoyable couple of weeks. In English, we're continuing to be captivated by the historical adventure, "Treason" by Berlie Doherty. What a gripping tale! Our focus has been on the courageous character of William, who finds himself in a desperate situation – on the run from danger! To truly understand his plight, we've been transforming into newspaper reporters. We've delved into the art of crafting compelling newspaper reports, learning about captivating headlines, the essential '5 Ws (who, what, when, where, why, and how), and even how to incorporate "witness" quotes using direct and reported speech. London Maths Week was also a resounding success in Year 5! We embarked on a fascinating journey into the world of number systems. It was amazing to discover that different civilisations throughout history and across the globe have developed unique ways of counting! We even had the exciting challenge of creating our very own number systems – it was a fantastic exercise in problem-solving and logic to invent symbols and rules. This week, we've also taken our first steps into the intriguing realm of Artificial Intelligence! We used some clever AI tools to assist us in designing birthday cards. It was incredible to see how AI could suggest different layouts, elegant fonts, and even generate thoughtful messages based on our initial ideas. Beyond our classroom, we've also been exploring how people live and work in the challenging environments of the desert. We've been learning about the incredible adaptations animals and plants have made to survive with very little water, and how humans have developed ingenious ways to thrive in these arid landscapes.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:
Maths - Roman Numerals
Writing - Treason - A newspaper article reporting that William is on the run!
History - Deserts - Threats to the deserts
Science - Making Connections - Investigating asteroid craters
