Year 5 has made a fantastic start to the new year! The children have been working hard and making excellent progress already. In English, they have been exploring their new text, "Kensuke's Kingdom" by Michael Morpurgo. They have been debating whether Michael should leave his home and sail around the world with his family. They wrote a balanced argument to give their reasons. Their enthusiasm for maths has been evident too. They have enjoyed using the manipulatives to show their understanding of place value. Reading has also been a highlight, with the children eagerly diving into a variety of texts, leaning about wolves and using their retrieval and predicting skills. History lessons have brought the past to life as the children have begun learning about the Mayans and how they compare to the Saxons, which they learnt about last year. Finally, their musical and artistic talents have been shining through as they have been learning sea shanties and tapping out the rhythms in music and using leaves and twigs to try different styles of typography.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:
Maths - Rounding and number patterns
Writing - Writing a diary entry
History - Comparing Saxons homes to Mayan homes
Science - Mixtures and Separation - Filtering using different methods
