Year 6 have had a fantastic start to the new school year with lovely new furniture, including comfortable chairs, freshly painted, cream walls and super stylish tables! The children are loving their new environment and are definitely showing a great work ethic for the year ahead.
In the first couple of days, we spent time getting to know each other again after the long summer break. We played some fun "getting to know you" games to help everyone feel more comfortable and ready to learn together. It’s been great seeing new friendships form and old ones get stronger! Everyone has been very excited to begin our new text, "Holes" by Louis Sachar. Our first piece of writing has been a newspaper report about Stanley stealing the famous basketball player's trainers. In our maths lessons, we've been diving deep into the world of place value. We’re learning how to read, write, and understand numbers up to 10 million! We’ve been using lots of different methods, like using counters and place value charts, to help us understand how the position of a digit changes its value. Our science classes have been all about classifying animals. We've been looking at the characteristics of different animals to group them into categories like mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish. In history, we've started to explore the fascinating topic of censuses. We're learning what they are, why they're important, and how they’ve changed over time. We’ve also been having fun creating our very own Year 6 class census to gather information about our class, like favourite hobbies and dream jobs. Finally, in DT, we got our taste buds going with some food tasting! We explored the five different food tastes to work out which flavours complemented others. This will give us ideas for our own cooking projects later in the term.
