What a fantastic end to the half term! Year 6 have shown incredible commitment and enthusiasm in their learning, and we are extremely proud of all their hard work. We wish everyone a restful and enjoyable half-term break. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to over the last two weeks.
Our English lessons have been buzzing with creativity as we delved deeper into our class text, Holes. The children have written incredible narratives from the perspective of the menacing Warden, focusing on using precise language to build tension and mystery. They also practised using dialogue effectively, not just to show character but also to advance the plot. We have been truly impressed with the quality of their writing!
In Maths, we have launched our new topic: Fractions. It has been a busy couple of weeks getting to grips with this challenging concept! The children have been working hard to find equivalent fractions, compare and order different fractions, and have now moved on to adding and subtracting fractions, all with different denominators. This is a key skill, and they have approached it with great determination.
We have wrapped up our Science topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, by shrinking down to the microscopic level! Our final lessons focused on microorganisms, exploring the different types (like bacteria, viruses, and fungi) and understanding their helpful and harmful roles in our world.
Our History lessons have challenged the children to think and write like true historians. They completed a fantastic piece of disciplinary writing, carefully comparing and contrasting two fascinating ancient civilisations: the Ancient Maya and the Anglo-Saxons. This required them to analyse evidence and structure a formal argument.
To conclude our Art topic for this half term, Year 6 transformed into graphic designers! Their brief was to redesign a cereal box. This involved much more than just drawing; the children had to carefully consider their target audience and think critically about how their choice of fonts, colours, and layout would appeal to that specific group. The final designs were vibrant and very persuasive!
