Hello Year 3 Parents and Carers, 👋
We've reached the end of an exceptionally productive half-term! Our LEO Explorers 🌟 have worked with immense focus and determination to complete their first major Year 3 projects. They continue to thrive, embodying the LEO values of Learning, Excellence, and Opportunity.
This fortnight was dedicated to drafting and publishing our non-chronological reports on the Stone Age. Our LEO Explorers continued to demonstrate excellent research and digital literacy by using ThingLink and various informative sources to finalize their research plans. They then brilliantly transferred this knowledge into a formal non-fiction report, successfully incorporating our focus grammar skills: fronted adverbials and coordinating conjunctions. The children showed great precision and attention to detail in maintaining a formal tone and following the specific structure required for this genre.
The children are now expertly navigating the world of three-digit numbers! Our LEO Explorers spent time comparing these numbers, confidently using the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols. We also delved into partitioning 3-digit numbers in both standard (e.g.345 = 300 + 40 + 5) and non-standard ways (e.g.345 = 200 + 140 + 5). They continued to use the PolyPad tool to visually represent numbers in multiple flexible ways. Crucially, they have developed their oracy, using our LEO visuals and prompts alongside mathematical sentence stems and vocabulary to "speak like a mathematician."
History 📜
Our exciting History topic culminated in a piece of disciplinary writing. The children critically evaluated the three ages of prehistory to answer the question: "Would you have preferred to live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age? Our LEO Explorers showed great critical thinking and knowledge application, using Tier 3 vocabulary to articulate their reasoning clearly and support their personal thoughts with sound historical evidence. This was a fantastic demonstration of their learning!
Art & Design 🎨
In Art, the children connected with their History learning by creating gestural drawings of a cave wall. They took inspiration from the dramatic textures and atmosphere of Stone Age cave settings, using their previously mastered mark-making techniques to express the energy and feel of the ancient walls.
Please ensure you complete the permission form (Google Form) for our upcoming trip to the Natural History Museum (NHM). The payment of £3.50 should be made through Arbor as soon as possible. Your prompt action helps us secure the necessary arrangements for this enriching learning opportunity.
We hope the children have a restful half-term break and look forward to the next half-term, where they will continue to thrive and flourish as independent LEO Explorers!
Best wishes,
The Year 3 Team
Children are expected to complete the following:
At least 5 reads in their reading diary each week
Century is here! A piece of maths and English homework will be set every Thursday with a due date of the following Monday. The homework will appear at the bottom under 'assignments'. The pathway at the top is suggested additional work that can be worked through as and when but is not an expectation to be completed.
Times table rock stars does not have to be completed daily, but it is encouraged to practise as much as possible.
Children are not expected to do Century and Times Table Rockstars every evening at home, but little and often is ideal! Thank you for your support :)
Please note, the inside of the reading diaries have changed. There are dates on each page and a 'homework' section on the left hand side but please ignore these. Please see the image below of how to insert the reads into the new reading diaries.
