Year 2 has hit the ground running this half term! The children have been incredibly busy and we are so proud of how hard they've all worked. We've already explored some fascinating topics and seen so much enthusiasm in the classroom. Read on to see what we've been up to!
We have explored the sequel to The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, The Day The Crayons Came Back. We have used the story's characters to create our own story where one of the new crayons is rescued by a hero crayon from the original book. To help us write this story, we have been using colourful semantics to help us build up our sentences to include adjectives and adverbs of time. We have also explored the characters and settings and used a story mountain to plan our stories.
Reading
In Maths, we have been exploring subtraction as finding the difference, partitioning and reduction. We have applied these methods to problem solving activities. We have used the idea of difference to help us solve problems involving pictograms and bar graphs. We have learnt how consecutive numbers always have a difference of 1 and odd consecutive numbers or even consecutive numbers always have a difference of 2.
In Science, we have explored food chains and how energy moves from one part of the food chain to the next. We have discovered that a food chain always begins with a producer and that it is eaten by consumers. We have also seen that the animals in the food chain can be prey, predators or possibly both a predator and prey.
We have used all the information we have gathered this half term to answer the topic question, Would you rather be in a hot place or a cold place? We described the Human and Physical features of our chosen are and compared the similarities and differences between hot and cold places..
Art
We have continued our topic on line drawing by creating wax resist pictures of our leaves again focusing on the fine details of the veins on the leaves. We then cut these up and used them to create a collage of our collection.
We also explored a Now Press Play activity about the weather.
