Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the new school year! The children have settled in wonderfully, and it has been an absolute pleasure to see every single child return with such enthusiasm and a positive attitude. We have had a fun-filled week with lots of activities to get us back into the swing of things, and the children have already shown great commitment to their learning.
We've been recalling our summer holidays and sharing our exciting adventures with our classmates. We then moved on to writing poems inspired by the book 'The Great Kapok Tree' by Lynne Cherry, focusing on using rich descriptive language to capture the sights and sounds of the rainforest. The children created fantastic poems to bring the setting to life.
In Maths, we have been busy with numbers! We've been recalling and counting in hundreds, tens, and ones, as well as counting in thousands to work with larger numbers. We've also been solidifying our understanding of place value, discussing the value of each digit in a number and exploring different number patterns.
We've embarked on a new unit on the Amazon rainforest. Using atlases, the children were able to locate the rainforest and discuss its main physical features, such as the dense canopy, the huge Amazon River, and the wide variety of plant and animal life.
Our new R.E. enquiry has begun with a focus on how important the River Ganges is to Hindus. We've started by looking at the importance of water in our own daily lives—for drinking, washing, and playing—to better understand its spiritual significance in the Hindu faith.
Our bodies are amazing! We've begun our unit on the digestive system with a memorable and messy demonstration. The children evaluated different models, including a very hands-on one using Weetabix and tights to represent the journey of food through the body! This helped them to understand the process of digestion in a fun and practical way.
We're so pleased with how well the children have returned to school and are looking forward to a fantastic term ahead!
Sincerely,
The Year 4 Team
