SCHOOL LUNCHES
We operate a coloured bands system for our school meals so that the children do not have to remember what they have ordered each day. The list of their daily choices along with the appropriate meal colour lanyard or sticker will be provided to the class teacher each morning and these will then be handed to the children at lunchtime.
Our school meals are cooked on site and the varied menus rotate on a three weekly basis. The menus can also be found on our website: https://www.brookfieldprimary.com/725/school-meals
Children can choose to have school lunches every day, a combination of days or just one day a week but we do ask parents to help them choose their daily choices at the start of every week to help with the smooth running of the kitchen.
Red - Meat Option / Green - Vegetarian Option / Blue - Halal Option / Orange - Pasta/Jacket Potato - (Option every other day)
We also offer Special Menus throughout the year, e.g. a Bonfire Menu and Christmas Menu to try and keep the lunches interesting and varied.
Children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 receive Universal Free School Meals
For Years 3,4,5 & 6 the cost of a school dinner is £2.50 per day, £12.50 per week. Payment should be made in advance using your Arbor account.
We would urge you to apply for Free School Meals if you think you might qualify, even if your child is in KS1 and currently receives universal free school meals until Year 3 because this can open up a wealth of opportunities you will be eligible for and allows the school to get extra funding. Please click on the following link to check if you are eligible for Free School Meals (PP).
HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCH BOXES
Research shows that when children eat well at lunchtime they perform better in class in the afternoon. Therefore it is recommended that all lunch boxes include...
At least one portion of fruit (e.g. banana, apple, orange, grapes, dried fruit, cherry tomatoes) should be included each day.
At least one portion of vegetables e.g. carrot sticks, cucumber, celery. These ingredients could be added to a sandwich or sweetcorn added to pasta.
Meat, fish or other source of non-dairy protein (e.g. chicken, turkey, ham, beef, pork, tuna, lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, hummus and falafel) should be included every day. (Oily fish such as salmon or tuna at least once every three weeks).
A starchy food such as any type of bread, pasta, rice, couscous, noodles, potatoes or other type of cereals every day (e.g. pitta bread, tortilla wraps, rice cakes, oat cakes) should be included each day.
Dairy food such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais or custard should be included every day.
Drinks should be only water or milk.
An example of a recommended lunch box could be a chicken salad wrap, an apple, yoghurt, a low sugar flap jack and a drink of water
Special Dietary Needs And Food Allergies
We are sensitive to the catering needs of children with specific dietary needs, including religious considerations. We have children at Brookfield Primary who have allergic reactions to nuts; they require Epipens.
Packed lunches must NOT include products that contain nuts (i.e. NO Nutella and NO peanut butter).
WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL
School meals cater for children with special dietary needs and food allergies. Children can choose daily if they wish to have a school meal.
So Please keep lunch boxes free from...
Fizzy drinks or cartons of juice,
Chocolate or sweets,
Chocolate spread or jam sandwiches,
Nuts
Greener School
As part of our work on trying to become a greener school, we would like to introduce a new initiative after half-term, to encourage children to think about trying to cut down on food and packaging waste.
For children who have a school dinner, we are asking for them to try and eat all the food on their plate at lunchtime. For children who bring a packed lunch, we are asking for them to try and cut down the amount of packaging in their lunch boxes. For example, instead of having items wrapped in cling film or tin foil, maybe they could be put in a small reusable box. Children could also have a reusable bottle for their water, instead of using bought plastic bottles of water that are thrown away after a single use.
If children manage to either eat all their food or have a lunch with no or little throw away packaging then they will receive a an opportunity to enter prize draw ticket at the end of each week. At the end of half term all tickets will be entered into a draw and one winner from each phase will be picked and will win an eco-friendly prize.
