YEAR 2
YEAR 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
We've had a truly fantastic final week of learning in Year 2!
This week, our imaginations travelled to London as we embarked on writing setting descriptions, inspired by the wonderful story 'The Tower Bridge Cat'. To truly immerse ourselves, we first created a soundscape of London, listening to and discussing all the different noises we might hear – from bustling traffic to distant bells. This really helped us to think about all the sensory details we would want to describe in our writing. The children then produced some truly vivid setting descriptions, skillfully using similes and expanded noun phrases to paint rich pictures with their words.
In Maths, we have been busy recapping various topics to consolidate our understanding across the curriculum. We revisited money, reinforcing our skills in counting and calculating with pounds and pence. We also explored moving shapes, understanding turns and worked on balancing number sentences, ensuring both sides of an equation are equal.
Our green fingers were put to good use in Science as we made our own plant pots by reusing newspaper. This was a great way to explore sustainability! We then filled them with soil and planted sunflower seeds.
We journeyed back in time to look at different types of castles, from motte-and-bailey to grand stone castles. We compared them over time, discussing how their design and purpose changed.
Our creative and engineering skills combined this week as we designed and built moving monsters using levers and linkages. The children showed great ingenuity in making their monsters move, and then proudly decorated them, ensuring they met our success criteria for design and appearance.
As the academic year draws to a close, we want to wish you all a lovely summer break! Thank you so much for all your continued support throughout this year – it truly makes a difference. Please enjoy a well-deserved rest when we get there!
Sincerely,
The Year 2 Team
