What a great few weeks we have had in year 6.
This week in Year 6 we have been learning about fractions! Children have learnt how to divide and multiply fractions in their workbooks as well as their challenges. During Maths, the children have been communicating with their partners to find the answers in the simplest form. Some children are simplifying before multiplying and some are simplifying after multiplying the fractions. The children has also learned how to add and subtract fractions. They have learned to change the denominators before they are able to add or to subtract the fractions. Next week the children will be learning how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages.
In Year 6, we are currently preparing to do our non-chronological report about lizards. We have designed our lizards and now we are learning to use relative clauses (with relative pronouns) and parenthesis. Next week, we will be beginning to write our non chronological reports about lizards including grammatical and figurative features, relative clauses, parenthesis and many more. Did you know: Lizards have existed on the planet for over 200 million years. Like many other reptiles, most lizards lay eggs. However, some give birth to live young. Some species of lizard are kept as pets by humans, such as bearded dragons, geckos and iguanas.
Now, we are reading the book called Holes by Louis Sachar. Here is a short summary: The book centres on Stanley Yelnats, who is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional boot camp in a desert in Texas, after being falsely accused of theft. The plot explores the history of the area and how the actions of several characters in the past have affected Stanley's life in the present.
Year 6 has been looking at Mayan Civilization preparing for KS3. As our approach to history, we make sure we get the job done by making them understand in any way possible. The Mayan Civilization began in 1500 B.C.E and ended around 900 C.E. and this ended due to starvation, drought, climate change, disease, and warfare. Year 6 has been doing timelines and comparing challenges within the rain forest.
We have also explored an acknowledged anti-bullying week. We took part in an anti bullying week workshop explaining to us what bullying is. There are four different types of bullying (which are called physical bullying, verbal bullying, social and cyber bullying). Physical bullying, did you know that physical bullying involves hitting, pushing, pinching or damaging property? It also leaves bruises. Social bullying is to harm someone’s life, to ruin someone's reputation or cause harm to them. Social bullying can also include: lying and spreading rumours about someone and hurting their feelings. Verbal bullying is when someone uses words to harass someone or hurt someone’s feelings. Verbal bullying is also caused to embarrass someone in front of their friends or family. Cyber bullying is caused by bullying online. Nowadays there is so much online bullying if you get these hurtful messages, we recommend you tell a trustful adult or block them.

We were also very lucky and visited the Sutton Life Centre in preparation for moving onto secondary school. We learnt about a variety of different life schools: fire safety, road safety, what to do in a medical emergency (Dr ABC), how to stay safe when on a train and how love is communicated in the right way. They children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and took away with them some very valuable life skills.
Children are expected to complete the following:
5 reads in their reading diary each week
Complete the grammar and maths pack each week that is given out every Thursday and due back on Monday
In total, year 6 should spend between 1hour - 1hour and a half in their homework each week.
If your child needs any help with their homework, children can attend homework club on a Monday or speak to their class teacher for support.
