Additional Learning Support

HE Learning Support

The additional learning support team, based at the University Centre, are here to offer advice, guidance and support. The University Centre welcomes all students with disabilities and learning difficulties and we want all our students to succeed and achieve their full potential. The role of the dedicated support staff is to help students get the most out of their studies and their time at Leeds City College.

General Support

For those students that need them, staff can help arrange alternative assessment arrangements, including exam access arrangements (such as extra time, a reader or scribe for example). Students can access assistive technology such as TextHelp (text to speech software), Mind Genius (mind mapping software), and if you need to record your sessions we can arrange to loan you a digital voice recorder. We can help you improve your study skills, from managing your time more effectively to developing your essay planning and proofreading skills.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

If you have a long term injury or disability, a sensory impairment, mental health difficulties or specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, ADHD, etc.), a DSA can provide support to help you study more independently. For some students it can provide general equipment such as an ergonomic desk and chair, footrest, etc., to help you when studying at home. For some it can provide assistive technology, usually software such as text-to-speech, mind mapping, dictation, etc. For some it can provide non-medical help such as 1:1 mentoring or study skills support. Some students are awarded a combination of these items.

Support staff will happily provide advice and guidance to eligible students who wish to apply to their funding body for DSA, from what evidence you’ll need, to arranging a Needs Assessment, to how to arrange your final support package. For dyslexic students we can also help arrange your diagnostic assessment.

For all HE students studying at Luminate Education Group campuses, there a range of support options available so please come and talk to a member of the HE Student Support Team: you can find their contact details below. Another option is to have a chat with your course tutors and they will help you contact the support team. Alternatively, you can complete and submit the self-referral form further down this page. A member of the support team will contact you to arrange an initial assessment.

Please remember, we are here to help you get the most from your course – if you think you might need some additional learning support, get in touch – the sooner the better.
