Use Writing to Learn Tasks
“Quick writes” during Learning Activities where students stop and “write to learn” are another way to promote engagement. Because writing involves so many senses, having students stop and summarize their thinking in writing not only helps promote engagement, but also supports understanding and retention. The purpose of these quick “Summary Point Writing” tasks is to have students stop at a designated point in the Learning Activity and summarize the learning process up to that point. Students respond in writing to a question or prompt. Summary Point Writing is effective in all content areas.
