LCS has provided the Criminal Justice Program with top of the line equipment, such as DSLR cameras and crime scene kits for learning how to process physical evidence at a crime scene and handcuffs and training weapons for learning how to make traffic stops and arrests. Students are expected to be good stewards of this equipment and to report any broken or missing equipment to the instructor immediately. Additionally, for safety reasons, some equipment may not leave the classroom or be used without the instructor's permission. Students may be asked to assist with assembling, cleaning, equipment and/or inventorying equipment.
Students will be sized for and required to wear duty belts during the weeks they serve as Class Lieutenant, as well as during certain hands-on activities, such as traffic stops and making arrests. There are training weapons on each duty belt. All training weapons will remain snapped into holsters unless the instructor advises students to remove them. All training weapons and duty belts will remain in the classroom unless the instructor advises students to move to another location, such as the parking lot when making traffic stops. Violation of this policy will result in a zero for a daily workplace readiness skills grade, a zero for any applicable daily assignments, an alternate written assignment in place of hands-on activities, and a referral.
The handcuffs are real. Students will learn appropriate handcuffing techniques during the Exploring Policing unit in Criminal Justice 1. Students will refrain from handcuffing themselves or others unless instructed to do so during a practical. All handcuffs will remain in the classroom unless the instructor advises students to move to another location, such as the parking lot when making traffic stops. Any and all handcuff keys shall be returned to the instructor by the end of class. Violation of this policy will result in a zero for a daily workplace readiness skills grade, a zero for any applicable daily assignments, an alternate written assignment in place of hands-on activities, and a referral.
This piece of equipment is utilized during the Exploring Policing unit in Criminal Justice 2. The training weapons are equipped with lasers that react with actors in scenarios shown on a large screen in the classroom. The training weapons look very realistic, and the scenarios sound/feel just as realistic. Students will not touch, remove, or alter any equipment related to the Use of Force Simulator without the direction of the instructor. This includes the screen and all wiring and cameras associated with the setup. Parents/Guardians must opt their student in to participate. All students who participate will have an opportunity to debrief after scenarios.
