The Criminal Justice classroom expectations align with our schoolwide expectations. It is a Career Tech Education (CTE) program, thus students will learn to model acceptable workplace habits and behaviors. The "classroom" includes any instructional zone in which:
a lesson is presented;
a practical activity is demonstrated or performed
by the instructor,
by students, and/or
by guest speakers; and/or
a tour of a professional facility is performed.
The classroom can be in the building, outside, or on location for a field trip. It also includes transportation vehicles to and from field trips.
Students receive a daily Workplace Readiness Skills (WRS) grade. When a student shows up on time with all of their materials, participates in discussions and activities, demonstrates a respectful attitude toward others, and maintains a safe environment, that student will receive all 5 WRS points for the day. Behaviors like not "calling in" via email when absent, being late, sleeping/putting head down, using unprofessional language, being reckless with equipment, etc. will result in loss of up to 5 daily WRS points.
Every two weeks, a different student will serve in the role of Class Lieutenant. This student will wear a duty belt every day and can choose to sit in a "living room" area. Class Lieutenants are responsible for demonstrating excellent leadership skills, assisting the instructor with tasks, keeping the room and equipment tidy, and encouraging peers to meet program expectations. At the completion of their role as Class Lieutenant, a student may qualify to select a "bonus" if they meet all 3 of the following standards:
They were present each day they were assigned to be Class Lieutenant and received all available Workplace Readiness Skills points on those days.
They have no missing assignments for the current quarter in their CJ class.
The class average for Workplace Readiness Skills is a 90% or higher.
Field trips and guest speakers are arranged for Criminal Justice 2 students. Because of the agencies we visit and/or host, the highest level of professionalism is expected of the students. Students are eligible to participate in these opportunities when:
the student's Workplace Readiness Skills grade averages at least 80% in Infinite Campus;
the student has at least a 60% average in any class the student may be missing during a field trip or guest speaker presentation; and
the student has no incidents of failing to meet expectations during previous field trips and/or guest speaker presentations.
Permission slips will be sent home for parents/guardians to sign. Students who are 18 years of age or older can legally sign their own. On the day of the field trip or guest speaker presentation, students may attend so long as:
the teacher has the signed permission slip in hand by the due date written on the permission slip;
the student is on time for departure;
the student is dressed appropriately for representing our program in a professional setting. (Examples of appropriate dress include tops that reach the waistline and cover undergarments, pants/shorts that cover undergarments, and shoes intended for daytime wear. Clothing displaying unprofessional images or language, pajama bottoms or slippers, and/or clothing that exposes the midriff, cleavage, or buttocks are not appropriate.); and
the student is willing to temporarily relinquish personal devices, jewelry, scarves, and other valuables when entering facilities that require that of their own employees (Blue Ridge Regional Jail, Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services, etc.)
