Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke
Having recently been expelled from high school, Jane Sinner enrolls in community college, where the student-run reality show "House of Orange" feels like her chance to start over. However, it turns out that a new start isn't all she wants, or needs--a family who understands her would be nice, but maybe the growing fanbase for "HOO" can suffice for now.
Review from School Library Connection:
Jane Sinner is a senior who drops out of her last year of high school after attempting to commit suicide. Instead, she enrolls in a special program at Elbow River Community College where she can complete her high school requirements. While there, she is accepted as a contestant into the House of Orange, a college-produced reality television show. She lives in the house with several other contestants who are all vying for a new car. The novel, which is written in a diary format, focuses on Jane's feelings and interactions with other characters. Jane tries to come off as someone who does not care about others, but she has a crush for a fellow contestant, Robbie. She sets out for revenge when she feels Robbie betrays her, only to find out that she was mistaken. The novel ends with an interesting twist. This novel is filled with the ups and downs of a typical last year of high school, the difficulties of overcoming a suicide attempt, and the tenacity that it takes to win at something that you truly desire.
