Everywhere You Don't Belong by Gabriel Bump
Claude McKay Love, a young black man raised by his civil rights-era grandmother on the South Side of Chicago, does not want race to define his life forever. When riots break out in his neighborhood, Claude takes it as an opportunity to escape Chicago, go to college, and create his own identity. However, in twenty-first-century America, for a young black man, there may not be a safe place.
Review from Library Journal:
Raised on Chicago's South Shore by his sharp-tongued grandmother, who was in the movement back when, Claude McKay Love is something of a nerdy, timid outsider, leaning on friend Janice as he tries to find out who he is and where he belongs. A riot after a young African American's murder forces him to face the question: Do I stay or do I leave?
