Unit 3 began this week with the Big Aha question How does the landscape change over time, and how can my understanding of that help me prepare for the FUTURE?
Over the next 6 weeks they will prepare for their end of unit task; It’s 2050. A major earthquake happened and many people left the area. You have been chosen to find the best location for a new human settlement in Marin. However, there are many things you need to consider in order to survive in this new world. One consideration is to minimize the risk from earthquakes, landslides, and the rise of sea water.
So that means we will dig into earthquakes, volcanoes, rock cycle, rivers, erosion and so much more. I can't wait! Check out their ISN and be sure to ask:
What/where are the world's major mountain ranges?
Where/identify the major active volcanoes?
Who is Alfred Wegener & Harry Hess?
Let's get dirty with Geology!
Pop Quiz: Identify the oceans and continents (#1-12) and major tectonic plates (letters). Go!
One of the most high-frequency verbs we use is 'to be.' For Spanish learners, the challenge lies in the fact that Spanish uses two distinct verbs for this: Ser and Estar. Over the next few weeks, we will be working hard to understand the differences between the two and mastering when to use one over the other.
It often takes time for students to become fully comfortable using these verbs correctly. To support them, we will spend significant class time on various activities and repetitive practice to ensure long-term retention—both in the classroom and through at-home practice.

Why have the Japanese traditionally built houses of rice paper and thin strips of wood? How would frequent earthquakes and violent storms affect people’s daily lives? How might people prepare for the earthquakes and violent storms that are frequent in Japan? This unit starts with a discussion of Earthquakes and Tsunamis and shows direct comparisons to the geology of California, especially the Bay Area. In Geography and Political Development of Japan, you will learn how the geography of Japan shaped the lives of its people. You will also learn about the different political, economic, and religious systems that have affected Japan’s history. Essential Question:How did physical geography influence Japan’s cultural development?Chapter 5 tests are finished but not graded. They will be returned next week
I've been hearing strong progress and effort on our new song "Dansbury Run." I can tell that the kids tend to play at a higher level when they really really like the piece, but I'm hoping they can get to the point where they can show their best effort on all tunes, regardless of their feelings about it. Behavior is still a point of concern and I'm hopeful you can have a conversation with your child about their effort and focus in class. Super fun global play day with the kiddos playing board and card games!
i-Ready diagnostic results were emailed home for students. In general, students showed strong growth between the Fall and Winter diagnostics! To support further growth for your student, please make sure they are completing and passing at least two i-Ready reading lessons per week AND reading for 20 minutes a night at home in an independent reading book. The main thing that makes a strong reader is...READING!! Just reading on its own is one of the best investments of time that a young person can make to get a good return in the future!
We have been discussing some really interesting ethical questions about epidemics and personal freedoms in class. Students are having thoughtful and respectful discussions about really important topics in public health.
When we return from break we will be exploring the concept of "social epidemics," and practicing informational essay writing about social and medical epidemics. We will also beging working in earnest on our podcasts, the performance task for this unit.
The Performance Task they will perform at the end of the module will be a PODCAST! (And yes, we will be sharing the links with you!) I encourage you to find podcasts to listen to with your students between now and mid-February and talk to them about some of the different features that podcasters use to engage their listeners.
In Art class, our middle school students are building upon their foundation in contour drawing by learning and applying shading techniques. This expansion of skills deepens their ability to accurately observe and represent what they see, fostering stronger artistic perception and visual expression. These instructional experiences are intentionally aligned with the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards, which guide comprehensive, standards-based arts education across grade levels in our state.
DESIGN- The last 7 days students began their first project which is helping students with cerebal palsy. After learning about the causes and conditions of cerbal palsy, students found that preventing a person from standing on their toes while walking, especially when they are younger, can mitigate symptoms and help calf muscles develop more symmetrically. Their project is to design and build an orthotic which prevents a person from standing on their toes, allows the foot to bend upward, offers support of the ankle and lower leg and is comfortable to wear. They get a budget and a list of materials and begin building this week.
