We have been hunting and gathering, creating cave art, domesticating animals and crops, and surviving the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age. Our test over the Stone Age will be on Thursday, October 30th. It is an open notebook test. Then we will be moving into the four river civilizations beginning out tour in Mesopotamia. Here we will explore empire mania and the never ending need for dominance by one kingdom or another.
This week, our scientists explored Thermal Insulation and R-value to test how well different materials keep heat in or out. Students compared data, made observations, and discussed why insulation matters. They'll apply that knowledge when we get ready to design and build our Tiny Houses starting next week!
Students will use what they learned from this investigation, along with readings and other class activities, to make smart decisions about materials and energy efficiency in their designs.
We’d love some extra hands in the classroom during construction days! Volunteers are needed — sign up here.
In the garden, we also planted a mix of genetically diverse fava beans, known as a landrace population. By growing a wide variety of favas, we’re helping increase genetic diversity — an important strategy for adapting our food crops to a rapidly changing climate. This hands-on work is a sneak peek at our Unit 3: Climate Action Now, where students will explore real-world solutions for climate resilience.
Corbolotti Study Skills: This week, students are creating career posters to explore future paths and think about the skills and education needed for different jobs. At the same time, we’re continuing to focus on organization skills, including keeping lockers and backpacks tidy, which helps students stay on track and prepared for learning every day.
Rembrandt/PE: Earlier this week our students took part in the Bike Safety course, which was a fun and educational activity for the whole sixth grade. We have now moved from our blacktop location, over to the turf field as we continue to work through our Physical Fitness Testing. We will be starting up our Track and Field activities next week, and students will get the opportunity to test their abilities with shot put, high jump, sprints, relay races, and long jump!
I'm very pleased to announce that 2nd period beginning band has started their first arranged piece of the year today (wednesday). This will be a big jump from the standard of excellence book we work on. Looking forward to seeing their progress.
4th period is also making positive strides and will soon be joining 2nd period in choosing an arranged piece to start.
The choir is making solid progress on our medley, "The Greatest Showman." We've completed our note identification assessments and are now focusing in on rhythm. Rhythm is key to musicians growth and understanding of how to sing the notes and lyrics they are seeing.
We’re beginning our next math unit on percents, rates, and ratios! This unit builds on students’ understanding of proportional thinking, an important skill that will be strengthened throughout 6th grade and applied in real-world problem solving.
Reminder: Students are welcome to come to my room on Thursdays at lunch for a quiz reteach or retake. I will accept any retakes from this trimester until October 31.
