Students are working on Chapter 9. These next few weeks we'll be categorizing triangles and discovering and applying the pythagorean theorem. Chapter test is on 10/24. Homework notebooks are due 10/24.
Next chapter, the teacher's edition/answer key will not be posted on google classroom to promote authentic homework engagement.
Trimester 1 focuses on geometric standards.
*Homework is posted on Monday and due on Friday in homework notebooks.
*My office hours are Wednesdays at lunch. I will have a sign in sheet.
*Many resources are on google classroom. Here are the codes. Did you know the full year schedule is under "resources" in google classroom?
*New this year: Mathematician Projects! Check it out.

Writing sentences and full paragraphs is one of the more advanced Standards that we're focusing on this year. The vocabulary related to the house and furniture gives us a perfect opportunity to practice our writing.
Students had been creating oral sentences describing the layout and furniture of a room and this week they wrote a full paragraph describing a house. The requirement for their writing was to use a variety of vocabulary as well as grammatical structures to avoid repetitive or similar sentences.
We don't expect perfection at this point, but it's been great to see how much progress they've made from last year!
We have dived into the first unit in our new curriculum from EL Education. We are reading a class novel, Summer of the Mariposas. Over the last two weeks, we been practicing multiple standards. The focus has been on:
-Writing an objective summary of both fiction and non-fiction.
-Strategies for identifying word meaning by using context clues, affixes, background knowledge.
-Defining and identifying various figurative language devices, such as simile, metaphor, pun, verbal irony, imagery, hyperbole, alliteration, idioms, and more.
-Students have also been paying attention to how P.O.V. shapes the tone and mood of scenes.
Next week, students will continue reading, and we will begin working on identifying themes and motifs, while also starting to practice research skills & note taking as students learn about monsters and spirits from Latin American folklore.
An important note on HW: We need all of our class time to do activities around the novel. As such, it is vital that students keep up with the assigned reading of chapters at home. It is essentially their only HW, besides completing 2 iReady activities by the end of the week. It has been clear that a number of students are not completing or even attempting the reading. Until I see a collective improvement in this area, there will be a weekly reading quiz to ensure students are doing the reading. Please push your students to make the right choice.
PHYSICS: Rockets! Did you see SPACE X and the recent launch last weekend? Are we close to inter-planetary travel? The next two weeks we will be making rockets out of water bottles. Students will design and engineer a nose cone and fins to fit a water bottle in order to maximize their flight distance and flight time. Then, we will use our data on each flight to determine the amount of FORCE acting upon the rocket, their POTENTIAL and KINETIC ENERGY, the AVERAGE ACCELERATION and how NEWTON'S 3 LAWS OF MOTION play a role in the flight of the rocket. Onward and upward!
FAST FASHION: Along with physics, students have been looking at the social and environmental impact of FAST FASHION. To bring some real world insight, students will begin Monday 10 wearing 10 clothing items for 10 days of school as a way to quantify the amount of clothes they NEED versus the amount of clothes they WANT. We will conclude this sub-unit at the end of this trimester a research-based, 5 paragraph essay.
IDEA: Students are making SKIMMERS and competing the next two weeks to see who can design the most accurate low flyer. The goal is make a skimmer that can fly straight and aerodynamically stay "stuck" to the ground. Students need to use their skills of using a blueprint with dimensions and be able to accurately measure and be precise, the more precise, the better the final product! Before making the real-world product students will be ramping up their game on Tinkercad using alignment and grouping features to make a CAD design.
Physical Education
Taylor - Next week we will be wrapping up our volleyball unit, and students will be showcasing their skills in a fun mini-tournament throughout the week! Each player will be evaluated in several key areas: serve, serve receive/forearm pass, set, movement on the court, and overall game strategy. This is a great opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned, demonstrate teamwork, and enjoy some friendly competition. I'm excited to see their growth and sportsmanship on display!
Corbolotti: We just finished some great Ultimate Frisbee! This next week, we’ll be mixing in some Track and Field events along with Flag Football. After that, students are excited to head into the gym for our Volleyball unit. Please have students bring their PE uniforms home on Friday to wash and get ready for the next unit.
We just started a new piece called, "Mr Blue Sky." You may recognize this from Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a super catchy, fun piece that the kids seem to really enjoy playing. Couldn't be happier with the progress this class is making. They're a joy to teach and make my job fun!
This month in art class, our students have been diving into color in exciting ways! We’ve been exploring watercolor and tempera techniques—and this week students are designing their own logos, combining creativity and personal style. Through these projects, learners are not just practicing brushwork, but also thinking about brand, identity, and visual communication. Next week, we’ll shift our focus to landscapes, using color principles to capture sky, ground, and depth. By weaving together different media and ideas, art becomes more than a subject—it becomes a bridge to thinking, exploring, and expressing across all of learning.
This week in Social Studies, students continued to work on their American Revolution project while also preparing for their end-of-unit test on Colonial America & The Revolution.
Next week, as we start our unit on how the Framers went about writing the Constitution, we will explore ideas on how to create the "perfect" society, including a mini-unit on Enlightenment thinkers including Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, and Wollstonecraft. We will be discussing some big ideas!
