This week students have been busy researching their Hindu deity, writing a speech to get their deity elected as the class deity, and creating campaign posters. On Monday and Tuesday, March 2 and 3, student will be delivering their speeches to the class. This project had very specific deadlines for each step: research, speech writing, poster. It has been a challenge for some to stay on task and have items completed on time. It has been a great lesson in time management. So, if you see your child working on speeches and posters this weekend, please give them encouragement and support because everything is due on Monday. Also, please have your child practice their speech in front of you at least three times so they will be comfotable speaking in front of the class. Please see speach rubric attached.
This week in science, students explored how density drives ocean currents and shapes regional climate. Through hands-on investigations, they discovered that differences in temperature and salinity change the density of water. Colder, saltier water is denser and sinks, while warmer, less salty water rises. These movements help create deep ocean currents that move water around the globe.
We also learned that ocean currents act like giant conveyor belts, carrying heat from one part of Earth to another. Warm currents can make nearby land areas milder and wetter, while cold currents can make climates cooler and drier. Students connected these patterns to real-world examples and began thinking about how changes in climate could impact ocean circulation in the future.
PE with Mr Rembrandt: We working through our singles tournament in classes this week, and will then move on to practicing our doubles skills in preparation for a doubles tournament. We will have one more week of our Ping Pong unit and then we will be moving out to the field for our Soccer and Field Games unit.
Study Skills: In Study Skills, students are continuing our work on digital citizenship. We’ve been discussing the concept of the “attention economy” and how many apps and platforms are designed to compete for our time and focus. Students are learning to think more critically about their online habits and reflect on whether their screen time aligns with what truly matters to them, such as friendships, academics, hobbies, and personal goals. Our goal is to help students become more intentional, balanced, and responsible digital users.
4th period - Very excited to share with you that this class has graduated from grade 1/2 music, to grade 1. Big accomplishment! Really enjoying working with these kids. Next thursday is the end of trimester 2 and this friday is the last day for students to complete makeup assignments.
2nd period - Unfortunately, I don't have happy news about this class. Behavior has been a HUGE problem in the class and I'm having to adapt my teaching in order to discipline in a manner that really reaches the kid to show them the importance of foucsing in class and giving their best effort daily. Students participated in a small writeup to reflect on what our current reality is, vs what disciplinary actions would you like to see put in place to aid our class flow and productivity. Please have a chat with your child, to see where they fall in this unfortunate situation. Thanks in advance for your support.
Super excited to perform with the choir this thursday at the elementaries to give 5th graders a taste of life as a 6th grade musician. The end of the trimester is next thur and for this trimester, no quizzes were given. Student grades will solely reflect effort and behavior in class. Next trimester, you can expect more assignments for both ukes and keyboards.
Class Novel: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Brian Mealer
This week was all about building background knowledge around William Kamkwamba's story and gathering information about his home country, Malawi. Using this information and our reading, students created discussion questions for our Socratic Seminar.
Our Socratic Seminar is on Thursday, March 5th. Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend. Please refer to our Bell Schedule for times and check in at the office to get a badge beforehand.
Next week's reading: Chapter 14- Epilogue
Upcoming Unit/Projects: Research & Information Writing
Students are wrapping up our Number Sense unit on fraction and decimal division. They’ve been strengthening their problem-solving skills and explaining their mathematical thinking.
As we close the trimester, students will take a Benchmark Assessment to measure their understanding of key standards. Students will have the opportunity to retake the assessment next week to show growth.
We will then begin our Algebra unit, where students will learn about variables, write expressions from word problems, and solve one-step equations and inequalities.
