This week we explored reasons for the disappearance of the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in ancient India. Students worked with Thin Slides, Fast and Curious, and Iron Chef Eduportocols in learning about this topic.
We will begin learning about Hindu beliefs on Friday. Next week, we will be choosing which Hindu deity to become an expert. Students will research this deity, create a campaign poster, and deliver a speech to attempt to get their deity elected for class deity.
This week, our 6th graders took science outside for a day of learning in the garden! Students also explored how the Sun heats Earth unevenly by comparing how different surfaces—like grass and black asphalt—absorb and release heat. These real-world observations helped them understand why warm air rises, cool air sinks, and how convection currents form in the atmosphere.
We then connected these local temperature differences to larger Earth systems, including global wind patterns such as the trade winds and westerlies. Students also learned how Earth’s rotation curves moving air (the Coriolis Effect), helping explain why different regions experience different weather and climates.
To show their understanding, students are creating air mass booklets that explain different types of air masses and what happens when they meet at fronts. These booklets combine diagrams, vocabulary, and explanations, giving students a chance to synthesize what they’ve learned in a creative and meaningful way.
PE/Mr Rembrandt - We moved locations this week and have started working on our hand-eye skills in our Ping Pong unit. Students will learn how to sustain a rally with a partner and how to serve properly - leading up to participation in an in class singles tournament.
Corbolotti: In Study Skills, students have continued exploring topics such as balancing their online and offline lives, managing social media accounts, and communicating appropriately online. We are now focusing on how to find credible information and understand what proper verification looks like in a digital world.
2nd period - We're just about to finish our 6th arranged piece this thursday, as we'll plan on recording it and listening back for feedback on where to improve. Super fun global play day with the kiddos playing board and card games!
4th period - We just started our 7th arranged piece on tuesday and I've been really happy with the level I've been seeing from this group.
This week in music exploratory we're transitioning to ukes and keyboards. We took a short walk over to the keyboard room to check out the scene and are planning on starting keyboards on thursday. Mon, Wed and Fri will be ukes and Tue and Thur will be keyboards. I think this will be a nice change of pace for the kids. Super fun global play day with the kiddos playing board and card games!
In our novel study of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, 6th graders are working to determine the central ideas in the text. As we become more immersed in William Kamkwamba's story, our classes will prepare for a Socratic Seminar - a very engaging class discussion. Students will develop questions and prepare for the Socratic Seminar over the next two weeks. We are about 1/3 of the way through and will finish the book before February break.
This week, we also spent time reviewing figurative language and launching Writer's Workshop. 6th graders are practicing writing with VOICE (using precise details & emotional reactions). Lots of great evidence writing with voice during our workshop time today (Friday).
In math class, students have been busy strengthening their skills with decimals and fractions. We recently reviewed decimal operations, including addition, subtraction, and division, and practiced multiplying fractions. This review has helped reinforce accuracy, strategies, and confidence with these foundational skills.
Coming up next, we will begin learning how to divide both decimals and fractions. Students will explore models and strategies to understand why the procedures work, not just how to do them. Encouraging your child to explain their thinking at home is a great way to support this upcoming learning!
