This week, our focus was on the mummification process in Ancient Egypt. On Friday, we started the 70 process of mummification by placing our mummies (carrots) in natron. The mummies will remain in the natron for approximately 40 days. Thanks to everyone who sent in supplies for the mummification project.
Next week, our focus will be on the geography of Ancient Egypt. We will investigate how the Nile was the center of life and compare and contrast the Nile to the rivers of Ancient Mesopotamia, the Tigris and the Euphrates.
This week, sixth graders explored how air pressure works and why it’s such an important part of our weather. Students built models to see how air moves from high pressure to low pressure as it relates to altitude.
Next week, we’ll dive into weather maps—learning how to read symbols, how clouds form, and understand the data meteorologists use to make forecasts.
Additionally, we are doing Month 2 of the 2 Steps a Month to Disaster Preparedness - Water! Water! Water! You can do the assignment on Google Classroom with them to identify sources of water you have and how to purify water in case of a disaster.
PE with Mr Rembrandt: We are continuing to work on our gymnastics and tumbling skills up until the winter break. Students will transition into small groups to work on a human-structures project that will challenge students' strength, flexibility and teamwork. When we return from the break we will transition to a Fitness Plan unit. Students will learn about some basic anatomy, fitness fundamentals, and healthy nutrition choices, and then turn in a poster-project to display their knowledge.
Study Skills: These last few weeks we've worked on our public speaking skills with various informal speeches. These skills include eye contact, tone, and avoiding filler words such as like or um. Now students are putting it all together with a "How To" speech. On the executive functioning front we've covered emotional regulation skills and how to develop a toolkit when experience intense emotions
Both band classes are making solid progress in their preparation for the upcoming concert on Tue Dec 16. We're working hard to see if we can add a 4th song to our group of 3. Stay tuned. Hope to see you on Tue for our 6PM concert.
The choir has all four songs ready to go for the concert on tue dec 16. We're currently singing "Moana" for fun and will conclude our preparation on mon and tue for the show. Hope to see you on Tue for our 6pm concert.
We've completed the Arts Integration Project: Mobiles depicting Greek Gods/Goddesses/Creatures associated with Greek Mythology.
Students are completing the first module in the new Language Arts Curriculum: Greek Mythology. We've used the students workbooks, the novel, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, along with the Language Arts Notebooks for our studies.
Additionally, students are working on their Independent Reading Logs, and I-Ready Lessons, to round out the 6th grade Language Arts program.
Ms. Kath Irving will be returning from her leave on Wednesday, Dec. 17th, to resume her teaching of 6th grade Language Arts.
We are continuing our work in our Rates and Ratios unit and have recently been focusing on understanding percents. Students have been practicing how to find the part, whole, or percent in different situations, and we’ll keep building fluency with these skills over the next two weeks.
A great real-world way to reinforce this at home is to have your student calculate the tip next time you go out to eat—ask them to find 20% of the bill! It’s a fun and practical way to apply what we’re learning in class.
Quiz #5 was returned on Thursday and should be in students math folder! Students are welcome to do a reteach with me during Thursdays at lunch, and/or a quiz retake next week.
