This week, we've been delving into proportional thinking with the beginning of our unit on percents. Students have been deepening their understanding of the connection between percents, decimals, and fractions- all of which represent a part of a whole. We've discussed various methods for solving percent problems and have focused on real world applications of percents.
A couple of reminders:
Students may join me for lunch on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for a reteach.
If students would like to revise and resubmit their statistics project, they must do so before Sunday evening.
CYU questions are updated daily and can be found in Google Classroom
What We've Been Up To:
Thematic Statements: Our class has been exploring the theme of their novels, working to articulate thoughtful and specific thematic statements. This process helps students understand how characters and events reflect larger ideas, a skill they'll continue to build throughout the year.
Root Words: In vocabulary, we’ve been studying the root words tell and port.
Upcoming Vocabulary Quiz: Students will have a quiz on words related to tele and port next Thursday, November 21. Students can study vocabulary on Blooket.
Portfolio Updates: Student Portfolios are a place to share our writing in a digital format and become comfortable with publishing our writing. This week, writers typed up a creative narrative that required them to writing with VOICE using precise detail, internal dialogue, and emotional reaction. Check out some of our pieces in the 'Student Spotlight' below:

Tiny house walls are up and insulation is being installed. Students are testing their understanding of how to minimize or maximize energy transfer (Standard ET2) by choosing different insulating materials. Groups are gathering baseline data before installing insulation and then testing again after insulation using IR thermometers. Photos of insulated houses are also being taken with an IR camera to see where heat is being lost. We want to give a big thank you to SPARK for providing the materials for the Tiny House Project. The IR camera is a hit!
We are moving from prehistoric times into written history. We are starting with empire mania in Ancient Mesopotamia. This week, we learned about the seven characteristics that make up a civilization. Next week, we will be moving into planning our beloved museum exhibits. Be on the lookout for request for materials to help students create their exhibit model and the interactive portion of the exhibit. Also, we will be sending out invitations to come to our museum in the next few weeks.
Next week we will be moving back into the gymnasium. The week before Thanksgiving break we will have some indoor games and fitness activities, and when we return from the holiday we will begin our gymnastics unit. Over the course of the unit students will have the opportunity to practice their tumbling skills, and work on various apparatus such as: the balance beam, mini trampoline, and the vault.
Band - The students are making progress on the key of Concert Bb major scale warmup. Specifically, the thirds are our biggest challenge. We won't be able to start an arranged piece outside the book, but I'm hoping to play a few of the arranged pieces in the book for our concert. We'll see how we progress. Last day of playing this week will be Thur, we'll be watching the John Williams doc on disney plus on Fri. Grades will be finalized this week.
Music Exploratory - We're finishing up "Found/Tonight" this week, may have it fully completed by the start of next week. Gearing up for our concert and will have to decide what we're planning on singing for all of you. Last day of singing this week will be Thur, we'll be watching the John Williams doc on disney plus on Fri. Grades will be finalized this week.
The final unit in Design 6 stressed several design concepts and building upon student motor and artistic skills to create complex geometric designs that stressed precision, working with corresponding parts to create patterns within the designs.
Trimester 2 will turn to Speech6, which will incorporate traditional public speaking, improvisational and performance strategies, and debate. The overarching goal is to develop interpersonal communication strategies so students can build confidence with audiences and peers. Many days will be filled with humor, practicing with performance groups, and delivering student written and selected pieces throughout the course.
