Over the past two weeks, students have been diving into geometry! Last week, we focused on finding the area of triangles, parallelograms, and composite figures by breaking them down into simpler shapes like rectangles and triangles. This week, we’ve taken our learning into the third dimension—exploring surface area! Students used nets to visualize and calculate the surface area of prisms and pyramids. It’s been a hands-on and engaging couple of weeks!
We’ve had an exciting few weeks in Language Arts! Students have just turned in the final drafts of their social issues informational writing, and I’m so proud of the effort and research they put into these important topics.
Next week, we’ll take things a step further as students work in teams to create websites to showcase and publish their writing. This is a great opportunity for them to consider audience, design, and digital presentation skills.
As we near the end of the school year, we’ll be wrapping up with some fun and creative activities, including blackout poetry and creative writing projects that let students express themselves in new and imaginative ways.
A quick reminder: students should continue reading their nonfiction chapter books both in class and at home. These books support our reading goals and build background knowledge to carry into summer and beyond.
This week in science, our 6th graders dove into the exciting world of cells! They learned about the Cell Theory, which explains that all living things are made of cells, and that cells are the basic units of life. Students also got hands-on experience using microscopes to observe plant cells up close. It was an amazing opportunity for them to see the structure of cells in detail, and they were excited to identify key parts like the cell wall, chloroplasts, and the nucleus. It’s been a fun and engaging way for students to explore the tiny building blocks that make up all living things!
This week, we finished our study of Greek Mythology. Students created an infographic and a slide to tell the importance of their god or goddess. These will be posted to the class website under class projects. Next week, we will be studying the four types of government in ancient Greece. Students will be creating posters that showcase each type of government. Please talk with your child about these two projects. I bet they could teach you a thing or two.
As we move locations back into the gym we will be stomping out some beats together as we learn some line dancing skills in our last unit of the year! We will spend a week or more learning some fun group dances, and then transition to volleyball skills for the last few weeks.
We will focus on the fundamental volleyball skills and work towards getting all the students able to participate in a full speed game.
Spring is here and the energy is high, I look forward to seeing everyone showing off their new moves!
Band - Both groups have shown tremendous growth in playing arranged music. One of the groups has completed, "The Forbidden City," while the other group is going to complete it today (thursday). This is our first grade 1 piece and I'm very proud of the effort and focus I'm seeing. Very much looking forward to our jazz band gig this saturday 1:30-2:30 at Bon Air (Gott's). Hope to see you there.
Music Exp - We just completed, "Don't worry be happy," complete with small group demos. One of the challenges we're having is playing the correct chords, strumming them on the correct beat, singing the lyrics, while keeping good time. This is common and is going to be a journey for the rest of our time together. Tomorrow (friday) we'll be picking out next uke piece out of the group of 5-6 I gave them.
Our sixth graders have been diving into architectural photography, exploring iconic buildings from around the world and experimenting with different photo styles. They’ve selected six buildings each, researched the backgrounds of three buildings, and and will write a summary of important historical and design elements about these iconic structures.
This writing and research step will lead to an upcoming assignment where students will use photographs to compose a photo essay, and corresponding to their daily life in some way
