With CAASPP testing wrapping up, students have been diving a little deeper into our 6th grade geometry unit. We've been exploring how to find surface area, calculate the area of composite figures and triangles, determine volume, and graph polygons on a coordinate plane. In addition to geometry, students have been working on a fun inequality poster project where they were each assigned a ride at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and had to write and represent an inequality based on the ride’s height requirement. It's been a great way to apply math in a real-world context while getting creative!
Dear 6th Grade Families,
We’ve just wrapped up an exciting unit in Language Arts! Students unveiled their social issues informational writing by publishing their work on team websites. Their collaboration and creativity really shone through, and it’s been inspiring to see them take ownership of their learning in such a meaningful way.
Here are a few important updates and upcoming dates:
📚 Library Visit – Tuesday, May 27th
We’ll be heading to the library on Tuesday. All books must be returned by then in order for students to participate in Field Day, so please help your child check backpacks, bedrooms, and bookshelves this weekend!
💻 i-Ready Final Diagnostic – May 28–30
Students will take their end-of-year i-Ready diagnostic next week from Wednesday to Friday. To keep things low-stress and productive, we’ll break the test into manageable chunks—about 20 minutes each day.
🔔 Reminders
We still have three weeks left of school, and we’re making the most of it! Students are expected to come prepared and ready to learn each day. That means:
Pencil pouches stocked
Notebooks ready
Chromebooks fully charged
Thank you for all you do to support your child’s learning at home. Let’s finish the year strong!
Sixth graders have been busy exploring plant biology! They recently conducted germination tests on corn seeds and are learning about the structure and function of flowers. This week, students will dissect flowers and use microscopes to observe pollen and ovules up close. In addition, they’ve begun working on their summative projects focused on either Diversity of Life or Climate Change. Each student or group has chosen a topic and is designing a solution to an environmental issue—an exciting opportunity to apply their learning to real-world problems!
Students analyze corn seeds for germination rates.
The end is near and our work habits are showing it. Please check your child's work on Google Classroom and Aeries. There has been a slip in the last few week, and I don't want anyone to be surprised when report cards are released.
Next week, students will be debating each other as citizens from the ancient Greek city-states of Thebes, Megara, Corinth, Argos, Sparta, and Athens. May the best city-state win.
Our final project of the year will be a Greek Symposium. Students will be choosing an influential Greek leader to research. On Tuesday, June 10 students will become that leader and present at the symposium dressed in a chiton. Please sign up to donate food to the party when the sign-up sheet comes out on Parent Square.
We rocked the house all week last week and learned 3 new line dances! This week we are transitioning to volleyball skills, and we will build students' confidence and skills with individual and group activities. As the group skill level improves we will work towards live action games during the first week of June.
Band - 4th period band has had a pretty challenging time as of late with behavior. Last week students completed a 100 question multiple choice test on music. Each student should have a letter they wrote detailing the class behavior and how challenging it's been this year. In order for each individual student to play again, that letter needs to be signed and turned in to me.
2nd period band is doing fantastic! They are 1/3 of the way done with their first grade 1 arranged piece and I couldn't be more proud of their progress and effort. Excited for you to hear them at the concert.
Music Exp - We are on our 6th piece on uke, "Good Riddance" from Green Day. We're hoping to have all fresh material for the concert and are inching closer to that. Keyboard compositions will be demonstrated next tuesday in class.
