Over the past two weeks, our 6th graders have been diving into the world of algebra! We’ve been evaluating expressions, understanding variables, and using algebra tiles to visualize algebraic concepts. Students have also been practicing combining like terms and creating equivalent expressions as they build a strong foundation for algebraic thinking.
Looking ahead, we’ll continue exploring algebra with topics such as independent and dependent variables, writing and solving algebraic equations, and graphing inequalities.
📌 Homework Reminder: Students now have nightly homework. Assignments are written on the board daily and are also posted on a Google Doc in Google Classroom for easy access.
Thank you for your support in helping our students grow as mathematicians! 🎉
Updates for the week:
We are continuing our exploration of Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. To deepen our understanding of Greek mythology, we will read a combination of myths and informational texts about the ancient Greeks.
Point of View and Adverb quiz grades will be posted by the end of next week.
CAASPP Practice Gamified. Ask your student about our friendly competition. Who knew study for state testing could be so fun?!
Percy Jackson reading for the week: Chapters 5-7
🎙️Tiny Book Reviews due today March 21st. Bring your earbuds 🎧 to listen at Open House on Thursday, March 27th. Look forward to seeing you there.

We're started our climate change unit. Students have been creating models to understand the carbon cycle and how human activities have affected it. Did they explain it to you and have you sign p. 76? We're now diving into the topic of climate change itself and exploring its impacts. Additionally, the students used a carbon footprint calculator to assess their own environmental impact and made adjustments to see how different choices can either increase or decrease their carbon footprint. Take 5 minutes to do your own carbon footprint calculation.
We’re also in Month 4 of the 2 Steps a Month. It’s about starting a “Go Bag” and reviewing first aid supplies. The students need to look over the Month 4: 2 Steps Handout and check in with an adult about first aid supplies. If you already have a “Go Bag”, this is a great time to refresh items. Here is the video explaining this months steps. Your child needs to have you sign p. 187 saying that they spoke to you about this important topic.
This is our last week to study ancient India. The students did a beautiful job on their speeches and posters. They will be displayed at Open House on Thursday, March 28 from 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm. We are learning about Buddhism this week and will be comparing and contrasting the two religions. They will be receiving their study guide tomorrow and taking our test on this unit on Tuesday, March 25th. We will be moving into China next.
March Madness has added some "pop" to our current Basketball Unit this year as we continue our skill building with whole class lead up-games. Students will get many more opportunities to practice their dribbling, passing and shooting skills as we work towards playing full speed games in our Good Times and Fast Play groups.
Band - Both band classes are making very solid progress on their current arranged pieces, "Shadow Fire" and "Blackbeard." Rhythm has been a bit of a challenge in 4th period and we're working on cleaning it up. 2nd period is really grasping rhythm and thriving. Our beg jazz band is super excited to be playing at open house next thursday!
Music Exploratory - Today our uke class started their third piece, "Hey Soul Sister." We're sticking to four chord tunes right now and will plan on jumping ahead to harder tunes as I see fit. We're also having fun with keyboards and currently focusing on our method book and improvisation. Good times are had in both classes!
Lastly, a select group of singers were chosen to perform at the elementary visits this monday march 24. Please be on the lookout for email details. Please note: this is only for a select group, so please don't be confused if you don't receive an email. The ukes are pumped to play at open house next thursday.
We have started photography. We start outdoor poortraits coupled with imrov group games to get students comfortable with the different ways that people take photos of other people. We compose pictures with light, shadow, perspective, leading lines, and foreground/background contrast to build different portraits.
Students with phones may use phones in class ONLY to take and edit photos. All other school phone rules apply in Photo 6 - students may not use their phones for texts, apps, social media, games, music.
We will be setting up how to share photos in Google Photo, so we can do editing and turn in assignments starting next week.
