Currently in math class, we are exploring decimal and fraction operations, with a focus on modeling fraction division. We've been engaging in material by exploring real world connections to fraction and decimal problems. We've also been practicing procedural fluency by using the standard algorithm to solve long division and fraction/decimal arithmetic problems.
On the right, you'll see a copy of a task students completed last week at the vertical whiteboards!
As always, if students are expected to...
Practice Check Your Understanding questions 2-4 times per week
Review slides and practice Check Your Understanding Questions if absent
If students need extra support, schedule a lunch period to come in and see me for a reteach and/or quiz retake
Some books are mirrors, reflecting back the way we see and experience the world. In our book club unit, Social Issues Book Clubs, your student may be experiencing their book more as a window to another worldview or struggle unlike any they have faced.
At this point in the unit, you student should be more than 1/2 done with their book.
Due Dates
Reader's Notebook Page due Tuesday, 2/4 (one day extension b/c a terrible cold had me out sick this week).
This week in science, we’re diving into the exciting world of climate and weather, focusing on how air masses influence weather patterns (Standard: Climate and Weather 1). Students are exploring this topic through an anchor reading called Air Masses and Fronts, and demonstrating their understanding with a creative One Pager. This visual project includes key ideas, quotes, and diagrams to help solidify their learning. We’re also adding a fun twist by applying what they’ve learned to our Air Masses Booklet, which the students had a great time painting the covers for this week! It’s been an engaging way to deepen their understanding of weather systems.

Climate & Weather (CW) 1—L3 Explain factors that change weather conditions (for example, predict weather conditions from given information about current and incoming air masses and fronts).
We are coming to the end of our unit on ancient Egypt. Students have been taught all concepts at the approaching level of the proficiency scale to the left. Students have applied these skills on various projects throughout the unit; for example, the mummification of carrots, the pharaoh's report card, God/Goddess trading cards, and the Egyptian social pyramid. Students will be tested on all knowledge from this unit on Tuesday, February 4.
Please make sure you are reviewing Google Classroom with your child to see that they are getting their work turned in on time. Many students are not completing work in class so it needs to be completed at home. Many students are not completing the home portion of their work. We fill out the planner every Monday together if you'd like to check there with your student for due dates.
Band and Music Exploratory - What an amazing show your kids put on Tuesday night. I was so proud of their efforts and the improvements they've made. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I did.
The class has been examining various speaking strategies used in negotiations, looking how to improve communication channels in order to have productive discussions about scheduling, time management, priveledges, and how to communicate effectively when students make a mistake.
Students also participated in our first Ethical Dilemma activity, which will transition into our next unit, debate.
