Math
This week, we've been discovering ratios, rates, and unit rates in math class! We've discussed real world applications of unit rates such as the age old question- what's the best buy? We took a look at mini, regular, and super gummy bears. First, students found out how many mini and regular gummy bears fit in a super bear based on their weight. Then, we found the unit rate of price per gummy bear. Finally, students figured out which gummy bear is the best buy: mini, regular, or super!
Reminders:
It is recommended that students spend 45 minutes per week on IReady MyPath
The Check Your Understanding (CYU) document is updated daily and offers questions and answers that align with what we're covering in class
If students are absent, they should review the daily slides posted in google classroom and practice the CYU questions
Science
This week we are reading Air Pressure, which is one of our anchor texts for the new unit on Weather and Water. We’re starting our new unit on Weather and Water and starting with Climate & Weather (CW) 1—L3 Explain factors that change weather conditions.
Additionally, we are starting Month 2 of the 2 Steps a Month to Disaster Preparedness. Hopefully from Month 1, you are regularly keeping your gas tank or electric vehicle at least half charged. Your child has a digital assignment about the 2 steps as well as needs to get a signature on page 188.
Language Arts
Post Thanksgiving Break, 6th graders will be writing essays - literary essays to be exact. They selected from the below short stories, wrote claims about character, and are now drafting their essays.
Authors hit their deadlines and ours is set for Friday, December 13th. Next week will be revisions and edits. Looking forward to sharing their work.
Dinner Table Questions to ask your 6th grader:
What short story are you analyzing for your essay? What's your claim?
Social Studies
We are excited for you to visit the Mesopotamia Museum on Tuesday, December 10. The kids have been doing a fabulous job becoming experts in their artifacts. They have been serious project managers, designers, and builders. After the museum, we will learn Hammurabi's ode by practicing his laws in a classroom court.
Physical Education
PE - Mr Rembrandt: We have been working on the gymnastics mats all week, practicing our balance and tumbling skills. Next week we will be using the balance beam, vault and mini trampoline, as well as continuing to practice our individual floor skills.
Music
Band - We're planning on attempting to play three arranged pieces from the standard of excellence book we work out of. We've completed our first one and starting our second thursday (tomorrow). Jazz band started this week on monday. I'm really excited to be working with your kids in this class. There's a chance we can make something happen for our upcoming concert, but I'm not sure yet. Our winter concert is Dec 17 6PM in the gym. More info coming next week...
Music Exploratory - Tomorrow we'll be recording our latest piece, "There has to be a song," and I'll be passing out both "For Good" and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, which the kids are super excited about...lots of singing in class, specially the song, "Popular," which I don't have unfortunately. Looking forward to our upcoming concert, more info coming soon...
Wheel Elective 6 - Rodgers
Trimester 2 - Speech 6. Students wrote and practiced personal stories, that students started to deliver to the class in our first short story telling piece. The presentation focus avoids memorization, instead focusing on developing an outline that focuses on the spirit of the story, which evolves as the student practices repeatedly since before Thanksgiving.
