The US Department of Energy oversees 17 National Laboratories and Technology Centers for Scientific and technological research.
The National Labs tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time -- from combating climate change to discovering the origins of our universe -- and possess unique instruments and facilities, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. They address large scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation.
Each of the 17 DOE National Laboratories is stewarded by a program office in the Department. There are 10 National Laboratories under the Office of Science, 3 National Laboratories under the National Nuclear Security Administration, and 4 National Laboratories categorized as Other Energy Department Office Laboratories.
