The National Lab Research SLAM is a collaboration among 17 Department of Energy National Labs that will highlight DOE research programs, educate policymakers and their staff about the key role DOE National Labs play in the nation’s innovation ecosystem and their impact on the nation.

What is a SLAM?

The SLAM is modeled after 3 Minute Thesis and Grad Slam. The SLAM is a competition where contestants are challenged to present a compelling three-minute presentation of their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. Competitors are allowed one PowerPoint slide, but no other resources or props.

Benefits of a SLAM

The SLAM is an event that highlights the importance of effective science communication, especially while communicating with the general public. The event is a great career development opportunity for participants and provides visibility into scientific disciplines and research. Participating in the SLAM promotes cross-discipline collaboration, and promotes networking opportunities with other offices and Labs. Participants can re-use SLAM videos for public speaking opportunities while promoting visibility for the National Lab system and DOE strategic priorities.
