History
Cleveland's Advanced Studies program began in 2004 as a School for Advanced Studies (SAS) with one single class of 35 students. By providing high-quality differentiated instruction with an emphasis on depth, complexity, acceleration and novelty, CHS SAS sites offered high-level academic opportunities that meet the unique educational needs of K-12 gifted learners, identified in the Intellectual Ability, High Achievement Ability, Specific Academic Ability, Creative Ability and Leadership Ability categories or verified based on critical thinking/achievement. Over time, the program increased to four classes.
In 2013, Cleveland became an Affiliated Charter. As such, we are authorized by the LAUSD Board of Education and follow District policies and procedures. Our benefit was to have more flexibility and some local control. In 2020, Cleveland decided to break off with the District's SAS program to give us more control over applications, and opportunities for enrollment, hence our new name, Advanced Studies.
In Fall of 2025 a new transformation began. As LAUSD made it more accessible to have dual enrollment with community colleges, we decided to form two pathways allowing students to pursue an Associate of Art degree from Pierce College alongside their Cleveland diploma, or to venture into interdisciplinary research with AP Seminar as a capstone class.
