This term our Transdisciplinary Theme was ‘How We Organise Ourselves’! In year 3, we delved into all things Italy! To kick it off we had a virtual trip to Naples where we flew over the Alps and made some very interesting observations! Throughout our virtual trip, we pretended that we were flying in an aeroplane, all whilst being dressed in our best holiday outfits!
Following that, we toured the Mediterranean and used maps to locate the different countries there. We then went on to look at physical features ranging from impressive volcanoes and mountains to vast coastlines. The children were able to learn about how volcanoes and mountains form! They even created some fantastic videos about the formation of fold mountains on the Chromebooks! After this, we then wrote some amazing Kenning Poems all about volcanoes.
As part of our history learning, the children found out about the day that Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. They learnt about the devastating impacts that the eruption had and how the whole of Pompeii was completely covered in ash. Next, we used all of this information to write some fantastic narratives about that fateful day in Pompeii. Once we had written our stories, we became reporters and wrote some brilliant newspaper articles about Pompeii being unearthed after many years.
One of the best parts of our term was when we made pizzas in school. As part of this, the children learnt about the benefits of volcanic soil when growing food. They also revisited the different ways that we get food, such as growing, rearing and making. Before making the pizzas, the children made their very own pizza boxes - trying to keep these as authentic as possible. Then, each class took to the kitchens on a separate day and became DPA’s very talented chefs. During the pizza project, the children used a variety of skills including chopping, slicing, mixing and kneading! We were really happy with how our pizzas turned out in the end!
