After a fantastic start to the school year for the newest members of Dartford Primary Academy, the children have moved on to explore a new inquiry into how ‘Our culture and local area may influence our homes. This started with thinking about where we live and the different types of houses we find in our local area. We went on our very first school outing to see some nearby houses such as bungalows, terraced houses and detached houses. We also saw the junior school where we will go once we reach KS2!
Understanding different houses involved learning about their appearance on the outside but also thinking about what rooms are inside a house. Goldilocks and the Three Bears supported us on our learning journey as we followed Goldilocks around the rooms of the bears’ house. All this new knowledge helped us become better estate agents in our careers shed where we showed off and sold homes. On some days there were huge discounts, with homes going for less than £5!
We have explored different techniques of representing homes such as using construction materials, painting or the iPad to create a home.
Throughout the term we have thought about some recent cultural events such as Diwali, Bonfire Night and now Christmas.
We have considered how these events cause changes at home. Similarities such as decorating our homes, wearing nice clothes and having a family meal. We see fireworks on the night of Diwali and Bonfire Night as well.
The children started their PE lessons this term. It has been great fun getting active in lessons incorporating dancing, balancing and using our physical skills. We also began visiting the library to choose a book to take home.
As we look towards the final week we are excited to have our final Christmas celebrations and to perform the nativity to our parents. It has been a fantastic term, where we developed our inquirer skills and became better communicators.
The Reception Team wishes you a lovely break.
