All children at Little Birds Nursery had an interesting and exciting term full of activities, enquiries and opportunities to learn and develop skills.
Our learning was centred around the story of the week and extended by the children's interests.
Using songs, dance, stories, construction games and art and craft activities children gained knowledge and confidence.
They learned about Diwali and made connections with fireworks from Bonfire night. The children talked about the time spent with their families observing fireworks and the sights and sounds they made.
Using fine motor skills, the children threaded straws onto pipe cleaners making Diwali garlands, necklaces and bracelets. They also painted fireworks by using cotton buds and were creative and imaginative while making Rangoli patterns using rice and paint.
Following listening to the story of Rama and Sita , theLittle Birds chose what material to use and constructed their own palaces. They were superb!
We commemorated Remembrance Day with a two minute silence and all children were very respectful. Using scissors, they then created poppies which they took home.
During Anti-bullying Week, we read Simon the Sock story then talked about being different and what makes a good friend. The children created their own patterns on sock shapes using felt pens.
We then read the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and thought of different ways they could all be friends. Some children suggested: “Share the bridge”,“Be kind to each other” and “All eat the grass together”. It helped the children to enhance their Personal and social skills. They then built bridges to help the small world goats cross the pretend water. This activity developed the children's problem solving, working in a team with peers and encouraged them to think of different strategies.
The story of Chapatti moon reminded the children of The Gingerbread man because the animals chase the Chapatti. The children used their creative skills and imaginations to paint representations of a Chapatti moon. They explored colour mixing with paint and small paint brushes.
To enrich their understanding children were able to taste Chapatti bread at snack time and spoke about the flavours and texture. Some of them had this experience for the first time and acted as risk takers by trying something new.
We also talked about the importance of washing our hands when eating and preparing food. The children then carried out an experiment with sanitiser and added glitter to represent how quickly germs are spread to express the importance of good hand washing / hygiene. They also learned how to use scissors safely to cut different materials in our environment and to operate and handle children's safety knives carefully when cutting playdough and preparing food in the Nursery.
We looked at the book ‘Let’s Celebrate!’ at story time and discussed the kinds of food eaten at different cultural celebrations. We spoke about some of our personal experiences and made connections between home and school life. This helped us develop our understanding of the world around us. Finally, we drew on paper plates our favourite fruits.
Children have been very excited to see the decorations and tree up in the home corner over the last week. They have been dressing up in various costumes to take on different roles. This enhances their imagination and creativity.
The postbox arrived so the children wrote to their friends and family, as well as their letters to Santa. This helped develop their writing and literacy skills.
Following the ‘Little Glow’ story the children printed with natural resources (conifer branches). This was to represent a fir tree on their Christmas card they were designing. They made a candle from a variety of materials cut into different shapes to attach to the card front cover and did their marking representing writing on their card. This activity allowed Little Birds to use different media while creating their own card.
During the term we also enjoyed doing Squiggle while you Wiggle developing gross motor skills and preparing children from nursery for writing. Children from Little Birds like using manipulatives to practise their maths and develop their fine motor skills. They enjoy using little counters, multilink cubes but their favourite is Numicon combined with pompoms and tweezers.
