St Gregory’s Catholic College, Bath, have made significant progress with their Lasallian Leavening Fund project which involves creating an accessible and eco-friendly wildlife and vegetable garden.
This garden was planned for a grass spot at the front of the school, an area that will benefit greatly from a renovation and show the passing world the school’s commitment to the environment - 'our common home'.
The project has two important avenues of leadership at the heart of its drive and implementation - sixth form student leadership and a horticultural therapy group for many students who struggle with mainstream academia.
AREA A: Front of school (Wild Meadow)
The preparation put into the wild flower area during the winter started to come to fruition in spring as shrubs flowered. Many other seeds have been planted below the surface and the ground continues to be toiled to ensure the wildflower area develops in the summer.
AREA B: Disused grass area by the astro pitch (Vegetable Garden)
The second area of the school being used for the project was an overgrown and previously inaccessible section of the playing field situated to the rear of the site. Students firstly cleared and prepared the land for this to become the main horticultural area. A 20ft long polytunnel was purchased and installed, allowing for students to have a covered area with work benches for planting.
