The Parable of the Leaven
And, again, he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
Luke 13:20-21

The ultimate goal of Lasallian Education, aligned with the Mission of the Universal Catholic Church, is to be the context, agent and recipient of the fulfillment of God’s dream for humanity: that is, a world rich and abundant in justice, peace, compassion, mercy and love; a world that challenges indifference, hatred and evil. All people of goodwill are called to be active participants in this journey of transformation.
The Lasallian Family has, for some time now, been offering the image of leaven to crystalise and focus our reflection and action (See Leavening Project). But what does it mean to be leaven in our day-to-day life? And why is the District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta naming this new fund, the Lasallian Leavening Fund?
The parable of the leaven (a simple Gospel story used by Jesus to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson) is one of the shortest parables we find in the Gospels. It involves a simple recipe. In its literal form, it describes a recipe to make bread. In its metaphorical form, it alludes to some key characteristics of the recipe to bring about God’s Kingdom on earth. We are all called to be leaven.
It is hoped that the proposed projects through this Fund, like the leaven in the parable will:
From small beginnings, increase and grow over time;
Exert influence and change from within the school/centre and the community;
Have a comprehensive (school-wide) impact promoting the common good;
Work slowly, and quietly, with clear results by the end of the process.
The image helps all Lasallians appreciate that, with perseverance, we are called to reach out to all, and especially to those who are most vulnerable or who experience various forms of poverty. All can contribute to a world richer and abundant in justice, peace, compassion, mercy and love.
The Lasallian District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta is launching a new initiative, the Lasallian Leavening Fund, to support initiatives in Lasallian schools and centres that:
Promote the Church’s and the Institute’s call for action in favour of the Care of our Common Home and an Integral Ecological Commitment among students and Young Lasallians (Refer to Laudato Si);
Promote awareness of Catholic Social Teaching as well as action by students and Young Lasallians in favour of those at the peripheries (most vulnerable in society) (Refer to the Leavening Project);
Promote spiritual formation among students and Young Lasallians.
Promote the 5 Core Principles of a Lasallian School.
