Dundalk project combines spiritual growth with enhanced sense of community
Students and staff at De La Salle College Dundalk have begun an exciting project to paint school benches in vibrant colours and in the process combines environmental stewardship, community building, and spiritual growth.
By engaging students in planning, implementing, and maintaining the improvements, it fosters a deep sense of ownership and responsibility. The project promotes sustainability through eco-friendly materials, aligns with Laudato Si', and cultivates leadership and practical skills among students.
Beyond beautifying the campus, it creates a lasting legacy of collaboration, care for creation, and commitment to social justice—strengthening both the school community and students' personal and spiritual development.
Our target date to start this project was January. Poor weather has delayed our progress so we had been concentrating on choosing our mottos for each bench and colour schemes.
We have a link with a past pupil who runs a paint supply business so we are getting new quotes for our paint materials and equipment.
We have also composed some potential mottos for our benches (see below). We are also considering how to include our mottos on the benches. We are collaborating with the Technology and Art Department on potential ideas; little plaques or stensils etc.
We have 36 benches in total to work with and plan to work with the four benches outside the Le Cheile Autism class first. The boys in our Autism class are very excited to be involved and along with some of their mainstream classmates will paint and design the benches outside their class.
Nineteen benches are in fairly good condition for treating and painting and we will move on to these next.
There are around 13 benches that need extensive sanding and treatment.
We aim to have the 4 benches completed by the end of February.
We aim to have at least 10 of the benches outside the canteen finished by Easter.
We will provide a further update at the end of this term (end of February).
