De La Salle Sixth Form Malta used The Lasallian Leavening Fund to give ten students the opportunity to engage in a meaningful voluntary work for a week in Scampia, Naples, while providing them with training, team-building, and Lasallian formation. The trip, from June 15th to 21st, proved to be an eye-opening and uplifting experience for all involved.
In November 2024, the students were presented with the opportunity to apply for a voluntary work experience in Scampia, Naples. As part of their application, the students were asked to briefly describe their motivations to apply, as well as what qualities they could bring to the group.
Student Motivation and Selection
The students expressed a strong desire to participate in the voluntary experience out of a deep sense of compassion, a wish to give back to less privileged communities, and a commitment to the Lasallian spirit. Many were motivated by personal experiences with hardship, past voluntary work, or family influence, and hoped to grow emotionally and spiritually through this opportunity. They emphasised a passion for working with children and recognised the importance of spreading joy, providing support, and learning from others' lives. Collectively, they brought a wide range of valuable skills to the team, including experience in childcare, teaching through creative activities, cooking, translation (especially Italian), leadership, empathy, teamwork, and adaptability. Their shared values of kindness, responsibility, and dedication made them eager to contribute meaningfully to both the community and their peers.
Since all applications were deemed valid, it was agreed—together with the Head of School and the Director—that the fairest selection method would be a ballot. Through this process, 10 students and two staff members were chosen to participate.
Funding and Preparation
The Lasallian Leavening Fund funding was used to partially cover travel and accommodation costs for both students and staff. Each selected student was asked to confirm their participation and contribute €200 to cover the remaining costs. The additional expenses for the staff members were covered by La Salle Malta.
In preparation for the experience, the group held four meetings. These served both as team-building sessions and planning opportunities to organise activities for the trip. The group was fortunate to meet Br. Enrico in person during one of these sessions, as he was in Malta for the Culture of Vocations week.
Alignment with Lasallian Values
This initiative clearly promoted awareness and action in favour of those on the peripheries. The experience in Scampia—a community often associated with social challenges—allowed students to engage directly with children and families who live in economically and socially marginalised conditions. Through their service, students were not only able to offer support and joy to those in need, but they also developed a deeper understanding of the importance of compassion, solidarity, and justice. The project fostered empathy, challenged preconceived notions, and inspired participants to become more aware of global inequalities and their own capacity to effect change. It aligned fully with the Lasallian mission to accompany and uplift those most often forgotten by society.
Reflection and Documentation
Upon their return, students were invited to submit short videos reflecting on their experience. A compilation of their comments is attached. Additionally, the leaders prepared a detailed document outlining the group’s journey and experiences, which is also attached.
Impact and Outcomes
Overall, the initiative was a great success. Both students and staff found the experience enriching and expressed a strong desire to participate again in the future.
