Year 1

It has been another busy term in Year 1. Here is an insight into our learning:

Maths

Adding and subtracting numbers to 20 using the part-part-whole model.

Non-standard measurement for Science Day!  The children created gliders and tested how far they would travel.

Number to 50 which will continue next term.

Designing our Gliders:

Inquiry

In inquiry the children have developed an understanding of how living things, like plants, trees, animals and humans, grow and change over time.

The children were keen to grow different plants at school which are now ready to be planted outside.  It was great to see them take responsibility for caring for the seedlings. Hopefully, the seedlings will thrive outside as the children continue to take care of them.

As part of line of inquiry two, the children were introduced to class monitor roles whereby they were given the opportunity to take on a responsibility in the classroom.  The children have enjoyed taking ownership of their new roles and have developed their independence skills.  They were also set the challenge of being responsible at home and it was great to see so many photos on the Google Classroom of the children helping their parents with washing up, unloading the dishwasher, etc.  Keep up the great work!

This brought the learning back to our community and built upon previous learning from Term 1.  The children developed their research skills through understanding how the local area has changed overtime to meet the needs of the community.  They were very surprised to know that our school was built on a fruit tree farm.  They were keen to learn more about other farm land in the local area and where their food comes from.  They were intrigued to know that you can buy food from places other than supermarkets.

They still have lots of questions and it would be great if you could support your child at home by talking to them about where the food you eat at home is grown or even involve them in the weekly shop. You could also look at the food packaging at home to see if it was locally produced or if it came from another country.

Our Trip to the Rare Breeds Centre

Here are a few of the photos taken on our trip to the Rare Breed Centre.  This learning experience enhanced the children's understanding of animals and how to care for the animals.

Parent Workshop

Thank you to all the parents that were able to attend this term's parent workshop.  It was great to see you all working together to create unique learning outcomes.

Reading Rainbows

Our Reading Rainbows link to our inquiry learning.  Here are the books that we had read:

Enterprise Class won the attendance trophy twice this term!
