Central Idea: Celebrations are Important 

Line of Inquiry 1: An inquiry into celebrations in our community

We have been learning about different celebrations and important events in our community, such as Remembrance Day and Firework Night. We learnt about the reasons why we recognise these times and  why they are celebrated at this time of the year. 

Line of Inquiry 2: An exploration of celebrations in different cultures 

We learnt about Diwali, The Festival of Light. We made diva lamps and explored rangoli patterns. Some children in our community celebrate this festival and shared photos with us of their visit to the fireworks at the temple. We also learnt that in China, babies celebrate being 100 days old! 

Line of Inquiry 3: An exploration of special times

We have been learning about the significance of birthdays, and when our birthdays are. We have read stories about birthdays, created story maps and learnt all about how we celebrate them. We also learnt the Christmas story and why we celebrate Christmas on 25th December. We wrote Christmas lists and letters to Santa. We performed our Christmas sing-a-long to our families, showing what risk-takers we have become! 

Line of Inquiry 4: An exploration into seasonal changes

We were excited to explore the snow that fell on the 1st of December! We have been noticing ice in the classroom garden, and during forest school we have been hunting for signs of Winter, such as the frozen leaves and blades of grass we have discovered. 

Our Learning in Apollo Class

As a class we thought of some questions we wanted to ask Santa. Then we used our I.T skills to have a go at finding out some of the answers, working well as a team.

Sammy used his knowledge of shapes to sort different shapes into 4 sides and not 4 sides. 

As part of our learning on birthdays, we enjoyed getting to make our own class birthday cake. We had lots of fun weighing out all the ingredients. The best part was eating the cake!

Exploration

We added loose parts and Christmas decorations  to our playdough. 

Letter Writing

Alba wrote to Santa, using her phonic knowledge.

Stocking Design

Poppy designed a stocking, using her pattern knowledge and asked for support to write 'unicorn'.
