Phonics

Reading is an essential skill for all children's academic success and has many social and emotional benefits for children. As part of this early reading is critical and so in EYFS, KS1 and through KS2 we teach children how to read and spell using phonics.

Last week, Year 1 held a phonics session for parents to come along and learn with their children. It was nice to see parents attending this. Below I have attached some of the phonics code that children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 will have encountered.

There is a brief sound clip video that supports parents and reminds children of the sound. This will support when hearing your children read at home.

Recommended Reads

Welcome to this term's recommended reads. We feel your children will enjoy these books.

The hope is that this section will help to further promote a love of reading across our school community as well as give children and parents/carers ideas and suggestions from the rich variety of books being published each month for children to read and enjoy either on their own or with their family.

Looking ahead to 2023 if there are any books that are read, and the children would like to recommend to their friends and peers in the school, then please let me know and I will add a pupil recommends section!

This term, we recommend:

The Littlest Yak: The New Arrival by Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley

The Midnight Panther by Poonam Mistry

Dadaji’s Paintbrush by Rashmi Sirdeshpande

Feature book

In this compelling eco-fantasy, Polly sneaks out to escape the government’s hot weather curfew and confinement in her aunt’s house, for a dip in the dramatically receding Truthwater Lake. There she finds a refreshingly cooling underwater portal to the past. Children will never think about the recent heatwaves the same way again after reading this. Spellbinding, The Tale of Truthwater Lake is the perfect read for 9-12 year olds.
